Default Will Nishikori & Raonic break top 10 at some point next season?

2 of the better 'Young' players in mens tennis atm.

Raonic is currently ranked 13th and Nishikori is ranked 19th. They are both looking to break top 10 at some point next year. Will they do it? Or will just one of them do it?

Don't see any of the current top 7 falling out of top 10 unless they have a Nadal-like injury. Probably Tsonga will stay there as well. Which means there are 2 spots left. I definitely don't think both of them will get in, as there are other (and higher ranked) guys who are just better tennis players at the moment. Tipsarevic and Almagro are good examples, but not the only ones.

My bet is that Nishikori will maybe break through at some point, but none of them will finish the year in top 10.

Raonic has a good chance, Nishikori is too injury prone/inconsistent, no way unless he ups his fitness big time.

Yeah, Raonic looks ready. Needs a streak of semi decent results and he's in.

Kei is still too far, he needs to stabilize his performances throughout the year

Raonic is a strong candidate for top 10 next year. Nishikori can reach the top 15 IMO.

Raonic will be lucky to stay in the top 20 at this rate.

Kei will do it 100% if (big if) he manages to stay away from injury all season. He could actually break the top 8, he generally dominates his matchups with Tsonga, Berdych and Ferrer and is obviously a much better player than the latter.

Raonic is not as good/talented a player, but he's more likely to stay healthy I guess. His ceiling is lower though, I think low top 10 (#9 at best) is the best he can possibly do.

I hope both make big strides next year though, especially Kei

Raonic will, Nishikori won't.

But if Cilic managed to make the top 10 ,both of them should be able to do it soon.

I wonder why you think that, Kei is clearly the more talented player of the two. He basically does everything better than Raonic apart from serve.

And Cilic will be in the top 10 again at some point for sure; even if he doesn't overcome his mental woes, he's too good a player to stay away from the top 10 till he calls it a day.

I doubt so, the next generation of players are mugs, a true weak era if there ever was one.

The likes of federer, nadal, safin, hewitt, djokovic and delpo were all winning slams when there were 18-22. Nishikori and raonic are an absolute embarrassment compared to those guys, they haven't even managed to dethrone players like tsonga and tipsarevic in the top 10.

I don't know. I have little tennis knowledge.

But most people seem to agree with me.

Raonic is no top 10 player. Servebots do not belong in top 10.

Raonic will, but only for a few weeks, then he'll drop out. Nikishori won't (I just love calling him Nikishori )

As some commentator said, if you can serve very well, you'll get to TB at minimum. Raonic won San Jose playing TBs in every match (won them all).

It's MTF, this should be your first clue that something is amiss

Seriously though, the only reason Kei isn't in the top 10 already is his terrible luck with injuries. He's a brilliant player and shotmaker: his bagel collection includes Djokovic, Ferrer and Raonic (relevant because of how tough it is to bagel a guy with Raonic's serve), with breadsticks over Tsonga and Berdych. Not only can he hold his own against the current top 8, he actually 'dominates' against Ferrer, Tsonga and Berdych.

For me, the biggest worry with Kei is his health. If he can play a full season with no injury problems, there's no way he will not be at the O2 for the WTF imo. His main challenge (apart from staying healthy) would be to make his serve a weapon (as far as possible) to be able to compete with the very best players.

Yeah, San José. You obviously need more than just a huge serve to be among the elite. For instance when he faced Kei (a great returner) in the Tokyo final, as soon as Kei got a read on his serve he bagelled him. Can Raonic improve his game? Yes, he can, but Kei has more game and potential overall imo - much better returner (by a huge margin) and shotmaker, moves better, higher tennis IQ, Raonic's only edge is serve and that will only take him so far especially in this slow court era.

Even this year, despite the ranking Kei had the better year in the big events for sure, with QF at AO and OG. Raonic is currently ranked higher because he managed to play a full season while Kei's progress was constantly stunted by injuries (in crucial junctures too like after his AO run and after winning Tokyo).
