Default Generations. Is it fair to compare Roger Federer with Djokovic and Murray?

I watched some videos from the Federer era all the way back to 2003 Wimbledon and his great battles against Agassi, Baghdatis, Hewitt, Roddick, Gonzales...

All these former great players that no one even remembers anymore. Federer is playing across 3 generations. He played in the era of Agassi and Sampras.

With Federer in the Twilight of his career is it fair to compare him with the players in their prime today?

Murray is faster and more consistent.
Djokovic is more powerful and mentally stronger.
Nadal is physically stronger and ironed willed.

Roger is outmatched and with losses to Berdych, Del Po, and others in 2012 shows he is out of time.

Isn't Roger pretty much Batman in the final film - a mere shadow of himself. Much weaker, more vulnerable, more inconsistent. Very human.

But he's still the Batman.

Obviously not (unless you are a hater).

Fed started playing tennis when surfaces were faster and had to adapt his game to the slowing down of surfaces (no more S&V, more baseline rallies). That at 31 he is still able to compete with rivals who started their career in a different era with slower tennis courts just shows how great he actually is.

Once upon a time there was a myth about strong and weak eras. On this glorious day the clownery was eventually unmasked: 30 y.o. past-prime daddy Fed became #1 once again in the supposed strong "Spartan" era with his rivals at their peak.
And they all lived happily ever after.
Long live King Federer!

Fed plays with fourth generation as well like Raonic,Dimitrov who are 9 or 10 years younger. It just shows how great he is. No one is going to say that but when he retires it will be huge huge void in the tennis world. Everything is around him love, hate even here on this forum.

No.

Fed's dominant era was significantly weaker than the current era.

Still the greatest ever.

I will say no but to say that his era is weaker than the current one is bit rude. Three guys do not make this era golden. Berdych how many titles he won,Ferrer 30 how many he had,Tsonga ,Tipsarevic ,Del Potro . These players are 5,6,7,8 and they have not got the total of Roddicks titles,Davidenko,Lleyton,Safin,Nalbandian,Coria. That was Federer generation everyone of them had a MS,Grand slam finals and that is the weak era. Sure

Fighting with three other excellent players for a Grand Slam title is significantly harder than fighting with none.

Do you know that Safin has more GS than Murray,LLeyton as well. So they were not great players because the media says so YES. They all get their titles from the sky

Sure, but fighting with ten other excellent players is significantly harder than fighting with three.

The main differences between now and 2004-6 could just as easily be 1) The level of the first-ranked player has dropped and 2) The level of those ranked 5 and below has dropped significantly. You may disagree but you certainly can't prove this is not the explanation, so better not to mention weak era/strong era at all.

I see you have no intention of trying to prove anything.

As you know, if those on top are simply too good, then there won't be much left for those behind to win. That does not mean they would be winless in other eras. Direct comparison between eras are impossible, tennis is not track-and-field where we can use the clock to determine if Usain Bolt is fast or just running in a weak era.

You can't compare Roger to anyone, he's the one and only.
