Default Is the ATP Bonus Pools too high?

I think the money of ATP is going to the wrong places and does not promote good things. It is like making the rich even more richer. I agree there needs to be a bonus pool, but this is way to high, this money needs to go to help lower ranked players.
Bonus Pools:

Code:
   YE Rk
1 (1) Rafael Nadal (ESP)	$2,500,000 (missed Miami, exception 600+ matches)
2 (2) Novak Djokovic (SRB)	$1,250,000
3 (3) David Ferrer (ESP)	$800,000
4 (5) JM del Potro (ARG)	$400,000 (missed Madrid, from 500k to 400k)
5 (6) Roger Federer (SUI)	$405,000 (Missed Miami and Canada, Exception 31 yrs + 600+ matches)
6 (7) TomᚠBerdych (CZE)	$345,000
7 (9) Richard Gasquet (FRA)	$250,000
8 (8) Stan Wawrinka (SUI) $224,000 (missed Miami, from 280k to 224)
9 (11) Milos Raonic (CAN) $188,000
10 (12) Tommy Haas (CAN) $155,000
11 (4) Andy Murray (GBR) $0 (missed Shanghai and Paris, forfeited)
12 (10) Jo Tsonga(FRA) $0 (missed Canada and Cinci, forfeited)

Total 6,517,000.00 (originally 7.5M)

It's a meritocracy in modern sport. It's pretty much right.

Why should the money go to lower ranked players?

It's simple; if you perform you get the bonuses. Mediocrity shouldn't be rewarded. Tough luck they knew what they were getting into once they stepped foot on the tour.

Andy Murray will be furious about missing his bonus. He only plays the sport for the money.

Nadal won $3.5 million in bonus money alone then given that he won the Emirates US Open Series and therefore won a $1m for that too...

ATP is a governing body to help players lower ranked players as well. They are the one looking out for the player and they should be able to aid those who struggle to make ends meet as a tennis player. plain and simple. I think many forget what ATP is really about.

Can't believe Federer gets to skip an event for being old.

12 years of service and because he played more than 600 matches...

I thought the top 30 got bonus money, being commitment players and all, but yeah, I agree, this should not happen.

Is that the effing reason Nadal keeps playing the bloody indoors masters and WTF??
For fear of losing the bonus pot?

If thats what Toni is doing, I am not at all supportive of their long term strategy.

Have they forgotten the goal - Number 17? Forget about everything else and just go after Slams - we all know that breaks to wonders for Rafa !!

Even he skips Paris or WTF, he would still get 2 million.

Only top 12, which is weird why 12. Such a random number.

Roger Federer is not 500 times better than the 80th ranked player in the world. He's good, but he's not that good.

#1 makes >50 million/year in tennis, overall. Maybe $20 million if you're Djokovic. #100 makes a decent living wage, maybe $100,000 on a good year.

A true meritocracy would have a much flatter pay curve.

The tournaments need these players to attend to get tickets sold and no matter how rich they are more money is always an incentive
