Live ranking now shows him in the top 200, with another 9 points for the next round (and then a further 10 for just being in the first round at Toronto?).

Matosevic will be a touch match, even if he has beaten him in the past. What is the highest ranked opponent he has beaten in a tour match?

Yes you're right - best result on the numbers alone as far as I can see is Sijsling at 73 at AO.

Over six months ago though... and I think this one will be all about who is mentally stronger (assuming he can get his first serve in % up from the fairly low level its been at recently including yesterday), and I think Thanasi will be. Though I imagine MM will be pretty motivated as well!

Saw him yesterday for 1st time live. Not sure how tennis canada picks Q WCs but clearly his Canadian opponent didn't belong on the same court as Kokkinakis. Only watched until 3-0 and it was clear Kokkinakis wasn't going to be losing more than a point a game or so. Looked really good and powerful for an 18yo. Thought I'd go watch a real match and looked forward to watching him today again. Now unfortunately I'm sick and on the couch for the day :-( . Hopefully he wins and I can see him tomorrow or tuesday in the MD (have tickets for the week).

Well in. I came in as he was five set points up on tie break on first set and managed to lose it, double faulting...was expecting a bit of a fight for the next two sets, but MM retired. Surely entirely coincidentally, Nishikori withdrew, so MM becomes Lucky Loser...

Indeed. Benefited Oz this time and can see why both would want to avoid drawing out what was already a long fight unnecessarily before MD, but really MM shouldn't become LL (assuming the shoulder problem clears up in time) on a retirement.

Gets Anderson R1. A challenging task...MM gets Garcia-Lopez.

Not sure either of them looks good for R2!

Maybe - but not if he does that again. Was going better than MM on the stats and way way up then...

Also, I hate that he got in on what looks like a very dubious retirement. Not his problem of course, but still.

So can he do it?

After today's bad tennis day for Oz (between MM and Mr Mousley), we could use a bright spot or too!

Anderson, aged 28, is currently ranked 21 and has been at around that mark for around a year, in the top 50 since 2011. Hard is his preferred surface, and has two titles on it; win/loss at masters level is 38/40.

Went down in the first round of Toronto last year to Dolgopolov, and while generally pretty consistent has a had a few upsets to lower ranked players, including USO last year where lost to Marcos Baghdatis (who Thanasi missed out on playing in the Vancouver Challenger with, he just won the final). So maybe there is something providential in that for Thanasi - lost out in Vancouver, but picked up the points anyway in Toronto. Looked as if he was going down, but gifted the MD; and now a chance to capitalise on it with a big win...
