It was a bit of a lesson. Kokkinakis has better shots, but was scattered and did not put it together whereas Ward was calm and focused and brought what he had all together well.
6-3 6-4 to Ward

He lost 6-3 6-4 but Ward is in good form, on a 10-2 run.

Ward played very well and the moment koki showed a lack of confidence in his volly's ward brought him to the net and ward came to the net on kokki's backhand and he couldn't pass him.

Kokki played well in patches but he also had one awful service game at 3-4 in the first. It was 40-15 where he lost his timing, putting a routine rally forehand straight up in the air and another in the net. Ward stepped it up than.

It's been a good little period for kokki though and we will see how he does in Toronto but a week or two to take stock of his game and find some confidence in his net game and improve the deep back hand wouldn't be the worst thing for gim now.

First up Toronto he will be tired but he has a low ranked (1713) you local Toronto opponent so that should help.

His opponent has only 2 rankings points but if Kokkinakis does win then he faces another aussin in the winner of Matosevic and Reid.

Pretty good draw (well not horrible anyway)! First round should be straightforward (even after red eye and a couple of weeks hard playing), and I'm pretty sure he beat Matosevic for his place on the Davis Cup team earlier in the year.

Talk about a blessing in disguise. That QF match was worth 17 points to the winner, and this R1 qualifying match is worth 16 points. His opponent struggles to win more than a few games in recent home Futures matches (except for one match). It's pretty much like being gifted a 10,000k Futures title (18 points) for only beating the lowest ranked player in the hypothetical Futures draw.

Agreed, on the face of it could be a good catch up (unless of course he'd managed to go on and win the whole 100 points on offer!).

Only catch is he has to do it straight after flying the equivalent of Sydney-Perth, and with the associated time difference. He tweeted he is taking the redeye - I've done that trip, arrives early am Toronto time (or if catch an earlier one, middle of the night)...hope he's not up early match-wise!

He plays 'not before 3pm', the last time slot. Organisers are courteous, they could have screwed over Thanasi to help their wild card.

Not quite - no points for someone in R2, 16 points for R3, so he'll need to get past the winner of Matosevic/Reid to get any points.

I'm pretty sure the draw sheet is wrong. 2nd round is supposed to say 1st round. There are 28 players in the draw and 7 qualify, so only two wins are needed to qualify. <96 draw M1000 qualifying are not stingy on the points.
  • 16 points for winning his first round.
  • 25+10(appearance in main draw points)=35 for qualifying.

Yeah I had another look - you're right. Good news for a few Aussies in QD

Nice article on him in Fairfax media:http://www.watoday.com.au/sport/tenn...801-zytcr.html

Here is a short extract:

Quote:
...In the meantime, he has, Kyrgios-like, slashed his own ranking by more than 400 places from 628th at the start of a 2014 season that has nevertheless been interrupted by a year 12 study break back home in Adelaide, an illness that saw him placed in quarantine during Australia's Davis Cup tie against France in February, as well as the latest couple of injury episodes in a career already notable for its physical setbacks.
"My game's coming along well,’’ he said after defeating Taiwanese second seed Jimmy Wang at this week's Vancouver Challenger. "I've been working on my movement a lot, and my backhand … and I'm competing well, I've been fit and healthy for a while, so I suppose I can get a few wins when I'm not injured." Not that he had doubted it, for Kokkinakis has long been beating most opponents on the practice court, and is now working on how to regularly translate rehearsal to the main event...

But Kokkinakis is smart, and articulate, and already has a career at which he excels. He also has enough perspective to note of life on tour that: "It's the old thing: the better you do the more you enjoy it. No matter where you stay, how nice the area, if you're losing more than you'd like every week everything kind of sucks. So you could stay in a rubbish place, playing a tournament that's not great, you win, you still feel better, so that's pretty much what it's all about.''

...His goal, obviously, is to qualify at Flushing Meadows, having needed some time to get over the "dagger" that was his failure to convert a match point and thus make a similar breakthrough at Roland Garros. "That kind of hurt me a little bit mentally for a couple of weeks – not hurt me, just frustrated me. But I think I've bounced back now, and looking to go one better in New York."

If so, as the teenager acknowledges and Kyrgios has proved, anything can happen, and what was his friend's "unreal run" at SW19 is an example of what can be done when the planets align. He is not trying to emulate Kyrgios, though, for Kokkinakis is his own man, albeit still a young one working out how to deal with a friendly contemporary's outstanding success.

Yes, there was a warm message of congratulations after the Nadal match, but he might also have just gnashed his teeth. Just a little. In a good way. "I don't think it's a secret," says Kokkinakis, matter-of-factly. "Obviously he's a year older, but anyone around the same age would be wanting to do what he did there. It's a great run, but it's all about being consistent, and I'll definitely get my chance."

Well, 16 very easy points. Pretty disgraceful that the organisers gave a couple of guys who could barely make a point against relatively low ranked contenders for a M1000 a go.

But I guess for Kokkinakis at least getting the easiest double bagel on offer might be counterbalanced by getting the top seed, even though my own bet is that another of the Oz to 100s might not make it in...but of course that depends on whether K can pull out his best play, which has been shall we say intermittent over the last couple of weeks!
