I've gone Dutch early in order to celebrate one of the most interesting coins in my collection. It is this coin (below)

"Indić Batav" on the right picture means it was produced in the Batavian Republic (a previous name for the Netherlands) for use in Dutch East India. The interesting part is how much this coin is worth. You notice the "5" on the left hand side of the left picture, and "1/16" on the other side. "G" at the bottom indicates that its value is measured in Gulden. So, how many Gulden do you think this coin was worth? Any guesses?

Not a bad guess, the left hand side is often the important one, but no.

I should perhaps mention that to guess the value is next to impossible, in fact if anybody comes up with the correct answer I'm going to assume you did an internet search....still, any more guesses? Or should I just tell you?

1808 is the year of production. It has nothing to do with the value.

I have a little coin collection also

My oldest coin is from Brazil I believe, 1880 or something like that.
Tomorrow I'll confirm that with the correct facts

How fun! Didn't think it would be many other collectors here. 1880s is a respectable age indeed. The oldest coin I got before I started buying older ones was from 1874. A relative had a German coin that old. It is so worn from use there's hardly any details left, but I remember marvelling about how old it was. Yours is older, relatively speaking, as this is many years ago now.

They noticed the error relatively late, by then the coins were already on their way across the ocean. As transport was slow back then and they needed coins badly, they decided they'd use them anyway.

The second thing to explain is that the meaning is "6 of this coin equals 1/16 of a Gulden". So 1/16 divided by 6 and you have the correct value. Have never seen any other coins with this kind of denomination (apart from the 5 - 1/32 from the same production line, worth exactly half of the other one).

I'm not a big collector, my grandma is the collector here
But I won't deny I have my little collection and I like it and enjoy it

I reckon it's a pretty amazing hobby. I know I'll get more into it in the future, because it's reaaaally amazing.
