December 1 is my birthday. Suddenly I feel closer to Romanians and Central....what do one call people from the Central African Republic? Central African Republicers? Well, anyway you know what I mean.

Antarctita, however, I'd rather keep at a distance. I'm not that fond of extreme temperatures.

Centrafricans would be a name. But the real population is a mixture of many ethnic groups, like the Baya, Banda and Mandija.

Well, we're due -10 centigrade up here in a few days.... That I can take. -50 or lower, however, I leave to the Antarctic explorers. And a few Russians and indigenous Arctic dwellers.

It's all what you're used to, I guess. 14 is really cold for Israel, probably comparative to -10 in the southern part of Norway. I know a man who grew up in the northern part. In his youth -30 or -40 was a regular occurrence in winter. But then he moved to South Africa and lived there several years. When he came back he settled much farther south in Norway, where temperatures are seldom below -15, but after his return he never felt comfortable in winter. Eventually he moved again. So I guess it's easier to get used to warmer temperatures than it is to get used to colder ones. Still, we have lots of migrants in Norway that came from really warm places, so it's not impossible.

November 28:

Albania: (1912)

The first organization that opposed the partition of Albania and pushed for greater autonomy was the League of Prizren, formed on 1 June 1878, in Prizren, Kosovo. The League used military force to prevent the annexing of northern Albanian areas assigned to Montenegro and Serbia, and southern Albanian areas assigned to Greece by the Congress of Berlin. After several battles with Montenegrin troops, the league was forced to give up Ulcinj to Montenegro and then was defeated by the Ottoman army sent by the Sultan in order to prevent the league from achieving autonomy for Albania. The uprisings of 1910–1912, the Ottoman defeat in the Balkan Wars and the advancing Montenegrin, Serbian and Greek armies into the territories where Albanians were majority, led to the proclamation of independence by Ismail Qemali in Vlora, on 28 November 1912. Albania's independence was recognized by the Conference of London on 29 July 1913, but the drawing of the borders of Albania ignored the demographic realities of the time.

Mauritania: (1960)

French rule brought legal prohibitions against slavery, and an end to interclan warfare. During the colonial period 90% of the population remained nomadic, but many sedentary peoples, whose ancestors had been expelled centuries earlier, began to trickle back into Mauritania. As the country gained independence on November 28, 1960, leaving the Franco-African Union, the capital city Nouakchott was founded at the site of a small colonial village, the Ksar. With independence, larger numbers of indigenous Sub-Saharan African peoples (Haalpulaar, Soninke, and Wolof) entered Mauritania, moving into the area north of the Senegal River. Educated in French language and customs, many of these recent arrivals became clerks, soldiers, and administrators in the new state.
