Default ATP turns down Indian Wells $800K prize money increase

BNP Paribas Open prize money increase in doubt

INDIAN WELLS — In addressing tennis players’ concerns over prize money from their tournament this year, BNP Paribas Open CEO Raymond Moore has offered to increase prize money by $1.6 million — $800,000 for each tour — with the bulk of that money to be distributed to the winners of the first three rounds.

To Moore’s surprise, the men’s ATP Tour did not approve the increase in a vote Tuesday.

“This is a surprise to us,” Moore said. “We don’t have an explanation. We are waiting for the ATP to get back to us.”

Moore said the ATP board voted 3-3, with CEO Brad Drewett abstaining from the vote. Since hearing the news, Moore said he sent an email to Drewett to see if the tour would set conditions for approval, but had not heard back. http://www.mydesert.com/article/2012...0701/311060025

ATP can't appear to be too blatant with greed

Indian Wells has always been up its own arse

too full of its own self importance

needs to be a week shorter, too

wouldn't be surprised if the 3 player reps voted yes and the 3 tournament reps voted no.

easy to see why the tournament reps, one who is IMG's guy and one who is Tiriac's, wouldn't want Indian Wells gaining any more prestige in relation to the others.

ATP is not even pretending anymore to represent the players.

wow denying a raise in potential revenue for lower ranked players? definitely totally disappointing from the ATP.... no matter what prize money a masters has, it will not be anywhere near the prestige of a grand slams so I don't know why they're being ass holes about this

ATP shouldn't even be able to turn it down... there should be a low limit that a masters HAS to have for prize money and then there should be the right of a tournament owner/supervisor to do what he wants as far as giving MORE prize money. strange

err, why does ATP even have a say in how much money a tournament can give out? Seems a little dictatorial, no?
