Default Janko Tipsarevic - A Clear Pattern Emerging?

Tipsarevic has retired when about to lose a match on a number of occasions.

This has been noted before, but the pattern continues.

There is a gambling scam which arises from the fact that some bookies void bets if the match is not completed. A player can bet heavily on himself to win, and get his money back by retiring if he is about to lose the match.

Tipsarevic has retired when about to lose:

Paris Bercy 2012: Q Jerzy Janowicz 69 L 6-3, 1-6, 1-4 RET
Cincinnati 2012: R32 Pablo Andujar (ESP) 40 L 4-6, 1-4 RET
US Open 2011: Q Novak Djokovic (SRB) 1 L 6-7(2), 7-6(3), 0-6, 0-3 RET
Wimbledon 2011: R128 Ivo Karlovic (CRO) 144 L 5-7, 1-3 RET
Eastbourne 2011: F Andreas Seppi (ITA) 51 L 6-7(5), 6-3, 3-5 RET
Roland Garros 2009: R32 Andy Murray (GBR) 3 L 6-7(3), 3-6 RET
Metz 2009: Q Gael Monfils (FRA) 13 L 1-6, 2-4 RET
Barc 2008: R64 Ernests Gulbis (LAT) 86 L 4-6, 2-4 RET
US Open 2007: R64 Rafael Nadal (ESP) 2 L 2-6, 3-6, 2-3 RET
Adelaide 2007 RR Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) 20 L 1-6, 2-4 RET

TEN TIMES HE HAS RETIRED WHEN ON THE VERGE OF LOSING. Even if you don't count vs Karlovic at Wimbledon, it's 9 times. His name has also been linked to other matches with suspicious market activity on a number of occasions.

My question: why hasn't he been investigated? He is making a mockery of the sport and it's integrity procedures. 2 or 3 times might be understandable, but this is totally disgusting.

In his defense, he would be crazy to bet on himself beating Nadal, Djokovic or Murray at a Slam , though the voiding of incomplete matches might explain that.

"Tough match?" World #3 Federer's ("greatest player to have ever played the game," you just said before rushing off the bathroom to change your underwear) H2H against World #58 Seppi is 6-0.

If it wasn't tough, Federer's victory would not be as glorious and godlike! Naturally, if Seppi and Isner were in Nadal's side of the draw, any victory that he managed to scrape out against these Tough Titans of Tennis would be pure luck!

Some matches are really suspicious, but you can't say he expected to beat Godović at USopen.

This one is the most disgusting:
Eastbourne 2011: F Andreas Seppi L 6-7(5), 6-3, 3-5 RET.

Retiring one game before Seppi winning his 1st title and spoiling his joy.

Junko Perhaps he just hates losing and when feeling bad or slighly injured it's his way to say "you aren't really better than me, I'm not feeling well, so I'll just retire".

Plain disgusting, lost so much respect for him after pulling it.. he was already 15-0 down and could've as well just stand in there and let Seppi serve a couple of aces, shank them or whatever if he really just wanted a way out immediately. Afterwards, he was just standing there smiling in the ceremony and wasn't injured, played Wimbledon, etc. Just a demonstration of how big of a baby and awful loser he is.

It was cool to see how Seppi stayed classy and didn't mind, total opposites regarding attitude and competitiveness.

The point is, he/his associates could (I'm not saying DID) get very long odds on himself winning the match, so a sizeable stake would net a HUGE return if he won or something happened to Djokovic. But the sizeable stake would be returned if he retired when a few moments away from obvious defeat.

Ten times is what really worries me, in fact sickens me.

Absolutely disgusting sportsmanship. Probably eclipsed Nadal which is a hell of an achievement.

I admit I don't understand sports betting very much, but where is the profit in only getting your money back/breaking even?

On Tipsy's defence:
1.) If a professional tennis player believes he can't win the match anymore, it's okay to rest their body, imo.
2.) I don't share the opinion of some MTF members according to that the opponent is hurt mentally in case a player retires short before losing. They are professionals and a win is a win. The money they receive is compensation enough. I really don't think his opponents will mind it.
3.) It wasn't his invention/idea what the bookies do. If some of them void bets if the match is not completed they should definitely change that or people should avoid them.

On his other statements / opinions / attitude:
We should separate Tipsarevic's private life from his professional tennis career. And people who tend to talk much often say stupid things

As long as there are people in this world who kill others (wars, polititions, etc.) we should focus our negative energy on them, really not on Tipsarevic. He isn't the problem.

There isn't any, but there isn't a loss either. The point is, he could potentially make huge earnings by betting on his own win as a long shot, and if he ends up on the verge of losing, he could pull out and at least break even.

I'm not saying I agree with the OP's allegations, just explaining the premise of the argument.

The only pattern I see emerging is the constant bitching about the way someone else goes about their life.

oh, I see... thanks.
But then that only counts for when he's the underdog, right? Not in matches like vs Karlovic, Janowicz, Seppi -- he wasn't the long shot there, I would guess.
