In that case you can be sure I'll be the first one to say something like "Djokzniacki", "ranking system flawed", and some other nonsense I had to hear about Fed being #1.

Once upon a time there was a myth about strong and weak eras. On this glorious day the clownery was eventually unmasked: 30 y.o. past-prime daddy Fed became #1 once again in the supposed strong "Spartan" era with his rivals at their peak.
And they all lived happily ever after.
Long live King Federer!

But the other year when he finished nearest to number 1 was ... 2003 (he finished very near to Roddick : a few losses costed a lot)

This is the second time since 1973 the year end #1's sole slam win was at the AO like Lendl in 1989.

Guga was year end #1 by just winning the FO in 2000. Nastase as well in 1973.

All the other players who finished year end #1 with one slam did at Wimbledon or at the USO.

McEnroe finished year end #1 in 1982 without winning a slam. Connors as well in 1975 and 1977.

can't wait for this, its less fun with federer being no.1 because we'd have to wait until wimbledon and even then he would've probably already lost the rank to someone else

now we have a real chance of a djokovicancki

Don't even compare! Pushniacki NEVER won a slam! (And won't win it ever, IMO)

All those are contested, though - computer rankings weren't functioning properly at the time. Ashe is mainly given as the true #1 in 1975, Borg or Vilas in 1977 and Connors in 1982. An uncontested #1 without a slam, as we've had lots of times recently in the WTA (Hingis 2000, Davenport 2001 & 2004 (both years without a final), Clijsters 2003, Jankovic 2008, Wozniacki 2010-11 (both years without a final)) has so far not happened in the ATP.

Hmm. Dunno. I made the comparison with the early noughties when Sampras and Agassi were in decline like Federer and Nadal now. While in 1985 the likes of Wilander, Lendl, Becker and Edberg were hitting their primes. Different situation to 2012. Federer and Nadal are in terminal decline and I'm not sure if they will even win a slam in 2013. Federer and Nadal are not where Wilander, Lendl, Becker and Edberg were in 1985 at all since their best was yet to come unlike Fedal...

You must be kidding me. Nole won a slam and that counts in the YE number 1 so he can't be compared to Wozniacki who never EVER won a slam

If Djokovic is #1 without a slam, I won't whine because then I'll come across as dumb as some of the Serbtards. He's won a lot of Masters and played GS finals. Not his fault the other contenders lack the consistency.

yes what I meant was a year with the 4 slams being won by 4 great players playing in the meantime and winning slams and preventing the number 1 to win them.

Fed is declining, Nadal maybe as well, but their wins in Wimbledon and Roland-Garros were still great wins by great champions who prevented Djokovic to win.

And imo, Murray is a great champion too, comparable to Edberg-Becker-Wilander (Edberg and Becker being seen as great champions now but in 1985 they both looked very young and nothing was sure)

the comparisons with Wozniacki, as Fed was compared with Wozniacki by some, may happen after the Australian open, if Djokovic doesn't defend his title but stays at number 1, which is very possible.

Sure but we have already seen Fedal's best years while in 1985 we had not seen the best of those guys you mentioned. Their best years were ahead of all of them.

A scenario where Djokovic, Murray and Del Potro share the slams next year and Fedal remain slamless is not that far-fetched at all. There is a reason why nobody won slams for 9 years in a row which is what Nadal will be gunning for in 2013. 2012 could have been for Federer what 2002 was for Sampras. Winning the last slam after a slamless year. Of course Federer's 2012 was better than Pete's 2002. We don't even know what Nadal's level will be in 2013. Too many question marks.
