Tbh is the year end no.1 thing is not even that important?

He's got the total number of weeks record already and that matters more IMO because the year-end no.1 is just arbitary (i.e it doesn't necessarily reflect who had a better year, sometimes it just shows who was better in the last few months), and I think he probably wouldn't have even have played shanghai if the 300 weeks mark wasn't on the line.

Not really. The YE rankings show us the total score for each player/year. In all aspects, Djokovic was the more constant and consistent player this year. Federer had some good moments which allowed him to stay #1 for 17 weeks, but he was helped by last year's superb ending (which didn't get him the YE #1 spot).

what I meant, is that the year end rank is just an arbitrary point in the year, sure it sounds nice though

but its not much different than having a 'mid-year no.1' or 'end-of-April no.1'

the total number of weeks at no.1 is a much more useful assessment of player's career, but I think even this can occasionally be slightly overrated/overstated (as seen in the WTA), slams are what really matters

Exactly. Some people still don't get it.

That's true. Every week, the rankings always reflect the best player during the last year, but like most sports, a year-end statistic is needed. There is no mid-year no.1 or end-of-April no.1, because only the end of a year has enough significance for everyone.

"I was the best in 2012" is a good morale drive for 2013.

It can happen that a player loses the No.1 in the first week of the following year, after achieving the spot during WTF. That seems arbitrary, because it may happen anytime during a year. But, if on December 31st, I am No.1, it means I was the best during the ending calendar year.

I am afraid your memory plays tricks on you. "Miles ahead in the race"? The discussion started post-Wimbledon. At that time Federer was leading. It was not until Toronto Djokovic got ahead in the race, and before that hundreds of posts had already been written about this issue.

I hope now we can leave it behind us, also in the eventuality that Djokovic should lose his AO title next year but keep his #1 ranking. IF he does, it will still be deserved, despite others having better slam record in the past 12 months than him.

Congratulations to Novak, another great year and appropriate that he should end as the #1. Outrageous consistency. The percentage of finals made in events played must be pretty damn impressive.

At least all the "computer #1" nonsense will stop.

Congrats to Nole and his fans. It's a deserved achievement for being consistent all season.

I agree about the total number of weeks being more significant (for instance Agassi only finished one year at number 1 whereas he spent 101 weeks at number 1, nearly two full years)

but still, the end of year point is nice because usually the year calendar regroups a plan and goal a player has made.

Fed would certainly have liked to get it but Djokovic was too good. Still Fed's main goal together with winning Wimbledon or the Olympics was to take the number 1 back at one moment of the year and he kept it for 17 weeks despite Djokovic's pressure, which is very remarkable (the number of ATP points Fed has at the moment : 12315 points, is higher than what he ever had in 2009-2010 and similar to Nadal's 2010 and 2008 ... and still Djokovic was just behind, which shows that it was far from easy for Fed to achieve that ... at 31 years old : apart from the ancesters Rosewall, Laver and Ashe, only Agassi has been number 1 at an older age in the open era, and with less good competitors).

to say the truth, something quite funny might happen after the Australian open : if Djokovic doesn't win the Australian open, he might very well be a slamless number 1 and I think there would be another reversed tards-war at that moment

looks more to me like 1968 when slams were only won by several tennis greats playing in the meantime (in 1968 Rosewall won Roland-Garros, Laver won Wimbledon and Ashe won the US Open).

Or 1985 (Wilander won Roland-Garros, Becker Wimbledon, Lendl the US Open and Edberg the Australian).

Still in both of those years it was clear who was the true number 1 (Laver in 1968 Lendl in 1985)
