Default Rank the backhands of the top 10 from best to worst

*Almagro is #10 at the time this thread is opened, in case it changes.
*I'm talking about right now, not at their peaks.

I think:

1.Murray
2.Djokovic
3.Berdych
4.Almagro
5.Federer
6.Nadal
7.Tipsarevic
8.Del Potro
9.Ferrer
10.Tsonga

1.Djokovic

2.Murray
3.Tipsarevic

4.Almagro
5.Berdych
6.Federer
7.Del Potro
8.Nadal

9.Ferrer

10.Tsonga

Something like this. Tipsarevic's BH is probably the most underrated shot in tennis, his shotmaking off that wing is superb, he's only trails Djokovic and Murray imo because of the latter two's BH defense.

I don't feel strongly about this list, but Federer's backhand used to be better when he was at his peak. Same with Nadal, to a lesser extent.

Default Re: Rank the backhands of the top 10 from best to worst

1-Djokovic (less error prone than Murray's, better defense)
2-Murray (he puts some frightening power in his crosscourt shots)
3-Federer (the most flexible, and he takes it very very early, so comparing the power with the likes of Almagro who are way further the baseline is useless)
4-Almagro
5-Berdych
6-Tipsarevic
7-Del Potro
8-Ferrer
9-Nadal
10-Tsonga

Agree with the groupings. I was having trouble placing #4-8, due to the differences in the players. Almagro's is used more for winners than the rest of that group but seemed odd to place it ahead of those with more variety.

Indeed. People seem to undermine variety in conversations like these, but Murray's is ultimately why I gave him the (*slightest*) edge as well. Consistently, Djokovic probably gives you the heavier, more forceful ball from that side. But Murray can willfully hammer the ball and change directions with his backhand as well. The real difference then, as I see it, is how varietous he is with spins and tempo.

At their best, I might favor Djokovic's ironclad stability and added weight, but Murray, to me, can be more effective on average. They're so close that it's a very nuanced discussion, though.

On a related note, Del Po's lack of variety is why I ranked him lower than most of his peers. He, too, can consistently give you a very forceful shot, but he's also very predictable in that sense. Rarely does he ever send it down the line, and when he does, it can be very inconsistent. That's one thing he did a lot better in 2009, in my opinion.
