Italian scientists sentenced to 6 years for failing to predict earthquake
Totally insane. Apparently this is manslaughter.
I can't believe this could happen in a modern civilized society.

Re: Italian scientists sentenced to 6 years for failing to predict earthquake
Are all the priests and fortune tellers in the area going to be locked up for not predicting the earthquake? I mean they could have asked God, or consulted the stars to see what the risks were.
Next they'll be locking up weather forecasters for not getting the amount of rain right.
Seriously, if these guys had said there was going to be an earthquake and recommended the region be evacuated, who would have listened? The simple fact is that if the people living in that area would behave differently if they knew an earthquake could happen at any minute, then they should have been living differently from birth.

Re: Italian scientists sentenced to 6 years for failing to predict earthquake
This is utterly ridiculous. The only good that could come of this is if this is the catalyst for reform of the inept and outdated Italian legal system.

Re: Italian scientists sentenced to 6 years for failing to predict earthquake
Absolutely outrageous.
according to the article some of the properties that were destroyed failed to meet building regulations that may have protected against the quake.

Don´t forget about the Pope
Seriously I couldn´t believe the news. Italy is a democratic country not some country trying to rip of it´s dictator.
Even when these scientists said that a bigger earthquake is less probable the logic tells you that they can only come to these conclusions because of the data they have until that point.
Everything else is just about probabilites.
Predictions on the future can never be 100%, that´s why they are called predictions and not facts about the future.
And as far as I know that part of Italy is known for years (probably middle ages) for the danger of earthquakes. Knowing this you either build earthquake prooved houses or move to another part of Italy.
To make scientists responsible here is just madness.

Re: Italian scientists sentenced to 6 years for failing to predict earthquake
This is absolutely ridiculous! If the data scientists collected pointing to a major earth-quake but said nothing, they might be liable for not warning people, but this is not the case here As the article said: it's a witch hunt and probably those dirty officials letting developers building houses not up to standard finding scapegoats instead of people who actually responsible.

Re: Italian scientists sentenced to 6 years for failing to predict earthquake
Madness. All of a scientific background should boycott 1 week and see how badly Italy would crash.
And the Mafia gets away with loads on top of that!!
P.S. The Pope has a direct line to God. Why didn't he mention anything??

Liverpool FC need to return to the good old days when the players were born and bred locally. Dalglish, Keegan, McDermott, Kennedy, Lawrenson, Hansen, Grobelaar, Toshack, Molby ........ or were they just the Chelsea of the 70's buying the best talent available in the market?

Great to see Europe punishing real villains. These fiends deserve to be locked up. Finally our society recognizes that rapists, mass murderers and child molesters are merely misunderstood souls who need to be pampered and pitied, while real criminals like scientists failing to predict earthquakes need to be locked up
