I've heard that the guy in Norway and many other crazy guys had written many crazy things in detail on their own website before their horrible murders
Attention whoring is probably one of the "pleasures" of doing such things.

Somewhat surprising that happens in China, I'd expect that to happen in a country more passionate about tennis. But there are mad people in every country.
But I don't know if he should skip Shanghai in the future because of that, I think those threats can happen in any country.

Go back to that word "crazy". Do you think a crazy person is thinking rationally? Obviously this whole threat sounds like a sick joke, but it shouldn't be taken lightly.

It's very common actually, the only part different here is that it went public. Folks with fame get death threats all the time. just most we never hear about.

I wouldn't say it happens all the time... although I do agree that it happens way more often than we know.

what surprises me about this happening in China is not that (not sure it's about tennis, it may be more about "image/fame") but the risk the guy runs, which is higher than elsewhere.
Besides, usually Chinese people have more practical concerns, I would have thought this kind of crazy fantasy towards fame was related to "lazy westerners living in a world of image".

Tio Toni got too much time on his hands with Nadal injured.

Don't even go there. Totally uncalled for and that puts you in the "crazy" camp to even say that.

yeah, this is really too bad for Chinese Fed fans and even just general tennis fans; Roger is normally pretty generous with autograph signing and such things. And they didn't get to see him last year. This year, they will have a better (more close-up) view of him on their TV screens than live. It'll be no different than watching him at another tournament that's not on their own soil.
I hope they catch the person.

I wouldn't take this lightly. Remember what happened to Seles? That crazy German guy didn't threaten her, he just did it and completely ruined her career. I think that all bigger tournaments should have metal detectors and screen spectators.

maybe not so much but I have to say that I was very angry at the French Tennis Federation when I saw what happened in RG 2009 final and how much time the security guys needed to enter the court.
If the guy had been crazy he had all the time needed to make the same as what was done to Seles.
This time I have to say that I'm reassured that it's in China (and also very importantly because there's a warning as some rightly said), and I think Roger will as well, because you can be sure that there will be many policemen in the stadium and all over the court, ready to intervene.
From what I read, it was also the case for the US Open 1981 final between Borg and McEnroe because of the threats to Björn Borg : there were many policemen around the court.

Re: Death threats towards Roger Federer? :O
I get why people are being reprimanded here for taking this lightly, but on the whole, threats like these are best to be joked about, because the actual threat is a bad joke in itself. A very small minority out there enjoy creating fear and chaos, laugh it off and they have no ammunition. Security for the players should always be tight, people with deadly intentions usually don't just announce it.
It's not the world that's to blame, the world is just the scapegoat, since most of us enjoy peace. This sort of thing is so rare because only a small minority would even think to do it.
