Well yes no one is in someone else's shoes and it is difficult to ascertain. But in my opinion, no matter how bad the injury is, one must play on. The crowd would rather see a man play it out like a warrior than throw in the towel, I guarantee you that.

You don't have to run around like a rabbit, you can't if you are truly injured, just let the guy hit some aces, throw in some serves and boom, it is over in 10 minutes. Who knows, maybe the injury will get better, the other guy will choke a bit? This has happened.

yeah the crowd can watch 10 more minutes of 1 player hitting aces and return winners while the other player can see his muscle strain become a muscle tear and multiply his injury recovery length by 4 but hey at least he finished the match

Unlucky for Melzer here, but good for vasek, good chance to make the QF

What I want to know is if Melzer was carrying this injury into the match, if he was he shouldn't have played, he also maybe looked disinterested out there, so he may have faked the injury to literally retire from tennis, cause who can find motivation after losing to Klahn.

melzer seems to just be generally crocked these days.

he's possibly paying the price for maintaining a top level singles and doubles career for a few years.

Not quite as disastrous to a players psyche as losing to Klahn.

players retire way too often for my liking and I suspect the vast majority could easily play on but this is ridiculous.

nobody wants to see a genuinely inured player standing still and tanking unless it's for a couple of games.

plenty of injuries can be made worse by playing on.

even something as simple as a badly rolled ankle. getting it iced and elevated as soon as possible can dramatically reduce recovery time.

yeah, I totally agree. Many of the players could continue but you cannot just group all retirements together, some of them are definately legitimate

crowd of sadists, maybe. no wonder UFC is so popular.
For sure there are instances where players retire too easily (i.e. just give up). but if it's real then no thanks, I don't want to watch anyone suffering pointlessly.
