The Grand Slam Cup was a tennis tournament held annually at the Olympiahalle in Munich in Germany from 1990 through 1999. The event was organized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF), which invited the best-performing players in the year's Grand Slam events to compete in the Grand Slam Cup.
The tournament was created in 1990 and was played on indoor carpet courts. From 1990 to 1996, it was held in December but was moved to the middle of autumn from 1997 to 1999. From 1990 to 1997 the tournament was limited to male players. A women's Cup was added in 1998 and was held simultaneously with the men's Cup.
Throughout its existence the Grand Slam Cup was famous for paying out the highest prize money of any tournament in tennis. The winner for the first three years of the Cup received U.S.$2 million in prize money, which dipped to $1.625 million in 1993, rose to $1.875 million in 1996 and back to $2 million in 1997 before falling to $1.3 million in 1998. If the Cup was won by a player who had also won a Grand Slam event that year they received a bonus of $1 million. Prize money for the winner of the two women's Cups was fixed at $800,000.

this tourney seems largely forgotten as it wasn't part of the ATP tour. Incredible sums of money on offer. Respectable winners; Rios, Sampras, Becker, Korda, Stich, Ivanisevic as well as Rusedski when he was on fire in '99 (beat Pete to win TMS Paris in straight sets). So much money was on offer the David Wheaton topped the money lists in 1991 on the back of winning this as well as having a solid year.
Does anyone remember this toruney and were the matches, especially 1999, 98, 93 and 94 finals as good as they look on paper?

The 1993 tournament sounded very exciting. Korda beat Sampras 13-11 in the 5th set of his semi-final, and then Stich 11-9 in the 5th set of his final. In the other semi-final Stich came from 2 sets to love down to beat Edberg.
I remember reading about how Gilbert getting into the inaugural 1990 edition as alternate was 'one of the proudest moments of his career'. He is one of the most money-obsessed players of all-time, and was delighted that he got such a handsome pay cheque thanks to Agassi's withdrawal. He publicly thanked Agassi for that.
Ríos's 5 set win over Agassi in the 1998 final was a very entertaining match, and Sampras did well to complete the YEC-Grand Slam Cup double in 1994 and 1997.

Korda saved 5 MP against Sampras and match lasted 4 hours 31 minutes.. following by 3 hours 48 minutes final

Great tournament. I remember the Korda victory very well (he received a whopping $2m of the $6m prize money). Can't forget his epic wins over Sampras and Stich and his clenched fists and the famous 'scissors kick'. BTW, his golfing daughter is doing the same thing now:

Magnus Larsson when he won it was brilliant. I got his match against Sampras on DVD will upload highlights in the off season.
