Playing on clay is not really a viable strategy in February in SUI unless you want to play indoors like last time and we saw how that one worked out. Go, SUI. Hopefully Roger can make some sort of run for DC next year.

DC against Czech Republic will be hold in Geneve.

Swiss Tennis was also in contact with Basel and the encounter could have taken place in St. Jakobshalle but they decided for a bit smaller hall in Geneve in case Roger won't play the 1st round.

Any idea on the surface, Doris?

I suppose if Roger doesn't play, the best bet would be clay, and if he does play, a swift indoor hard-court.

There were no statements about the surface yet, George.

I'm always for the decision to force on the strength of a team instead of weakening the opponent.

I don't know if the Swiss team will risk again to play on indoor clay.

If Roger doesn't play clay will surely give an advantage to Stan but I don't see who could win a 3rd point for the Swiss team and I don't know if Stan could beat Tomas in the first place.

Yeah, as much as I like Marco Chiudinelli, the only chance he has of chipping in with a point is if it were on a pretty fast hard-court.

I think we're all being maybe a bit wishful thinking Stan on his own has a chance to win. The Czechs are in this year's final for a reason.

Yes, IMO Roger has to play for them to have a chance. I'm hoping he will.

According to Swiss media Roger told Swiss Tennis that the chances he is going to play the 1st round are low. He said he would have to arrange his schedule wisely "to stay in tennis".
"When I play so much like in the last 2 years it will get difficult."

The final decision if Roger is going to play DC will be made in a few weeks.

Here they write Fed has already withdrawn from the DC tie versus the Czechs (But actually this article is about the contract between Fed and the Basel tourney which has to be renewed from this year on and that Fed wants quite a lot money).

I hope Stand didn't say it but if he did it I don't like the way. Why not to speak privately with Roger and clear all. Considering that in the Olympics they lost because of night entertainment of Wawrinka.

Quote:
Stanislas Wawrinka answers hard- nosed to Roger Federer, who questioned his attendance for the World Group match of Davis Cup between Switzerland and Czech Republic planned for February in Geneva.

Here the words of Stan, quoted by Aargauer Zeitung and supported by the vice president of the Swiss Federation Keller: “ I really can’t understand him. I don’t understand why would not play in Geneva, it’s not nice. Roger makes his plans in a precise way regarding not only a season but two seasons together, but for the Davis he comes down to make just a last minute decision. It’s not fair for the team and for the supporters.”

I had another version on a French website : Stan said "I don't understand why he doesn't want to play against the Czechs", and Keller, vice-president of Swiss Federation, said the second part : that Fed usually plans 2 years in advance except for the Davis cup. Didn't read "it's not nice".

That version was different from what tennisworld says and less bothering about Stan.

But well anyway I understand them.

But what I don't understand is that everybody seems to think that he will really not come whereas when Fed had first said it, I had understood "I'm not sure yet, and don't choose the place according to me" ... the same as usual in my eyes, he always says that : what's different this time which lets everybody think that for sure he will not come ?

In case he doesn't come, yes I would be surprised too and would surely understand Stan and Swiss Federation's disappointment (but if what's not fair in their eyes is that he always decides in last minute, they might get a good news : he might say he will not play it anymore, in that case would they be happy ? )

But if Keller, the vice-president of the Swiss Federation really tells the media "Wawrinka told me that about Fed and said he's not nice", this guy is completely dumb or only cares about himself, because that's what the fucking media (like tennisworld) want and it will do nothing good for Swiss team. In none of the versions anyway Stan did say publicly those things then don't accuse Stan : it seems that this Keller guy has the crucial role in that case.

Maybe Doris (or Chaz because it seems the initial source is the article Chaz quoted above) who has access to Swiss German speaking media and first said that Fed had said that "his chances were low" will be able to explain all thse things better.

In the Swiss French speaking media I didn't read anything about that.

Well, it has to be said, that's a pretty lousy translation - almost Denglish - so who knows what Stan actually said? (What language does he normally speak? I've only ever seen him quoted in French, but that quote definitely sounds as though it came from German originally).

But anyway, wasn't Fed quoted as saying "Wohl nicht" re DC? I read that as "probably not" - native speakers please correct me if I'm wrong.

Nah, Stan doesn't speak German at all, only French.

The Swiss tennis federation are taking advantage of Roger... and he's too nice to call them out publicly. They're using all their dirty tricks to make him look like the bad guy, but they don't really believe they can win DC -- even with Roger. They just want the ticket revenue he generates.

Actually from the Google translation of the German-speaking article posted by Chaz, I understand that Keller had prepared everything for the tie being in Basel and had to cancel it because Fed said he was not sure to play.

Then he was clearly upset and probably said those things to German speaking media, especially Aargauerzeitung which seems to have quoted this Keller a lot.

Anyway, unless Fed wins Davis cup with Switzerland, he will always be criticized a lot.

If he plays against the Czechs and loses to Berdych, they will find something else as they found against the USA.

But still I fully understand that it would be very disappointing for them if he doesn't play against the Czechs because they actually have a good draw for an unseeded country (except Argentina in Argentina in semis but you can't have it all) and if Fed decides not to play, they can surely be upset and depressed about their future in Davis cup, and angry against him, esp. because of the hope he had given.

But if all this just comes from the fact that a guy was disappointed that the tie will not be played in Basel because Fed has no certainty, that looks "light" to me.

Yeah that's almost it.

Here the part of the text where they write about it:
Quote:
Kein Davis-Cup in Basel

In the following I will simply try to make a proper translation of this (which is also a good exercise for me as I'm still going to school and having English lessons):

Quote:
No Davis-Cup in Basel
Probably Brennwald's arguments are like in Davis-Cup even though Federer hides his emotions sometimes (well I even do not understand this sentence in German because of the verb "spielen" which is like "to play" in English). There his fellows had to register that he won't tkae part in the 1st round against the Czech Republic in February. Wawrinka & Co. are disappointed, but nobody critizises in the public.
Because of that Erik Keller, as vice president of Swiss Tennis responsible for DC, had to change up his plans. Everything was set for playing the tie @ St. Jakobshalle in Basel. With Federer's "no" he had to refuse it of course. DC in Basel and Federer stays far away, this simply doesn't work. Probably Federer would have been put under immense pressure to play there after all. Meanwhile this topic is closed, the Swiss will play against the Czechs in Geneve.
Hope this translation is good enough and better than the google translate

So actually I don't know where these quotes of Stan come from as here they say that nobody critizises him through media or the public in general.

thanks a lot : I had first read about it on a French website www.welovetennis.fr and now tennisworldusa and Keller was involved as the source in both articles, Wawrinka just being exposed in different ways as I said.
