good choice. i mean he made his schedule considering he wouldnt get to the qfs of wimbledon for sure
a bit of rest and time to realize what he has achieved and prepare for hardcourt season will be so good for nick, imo

It was a right choice to skip newport. Nick needs some rest now, in order to come back strongly in the HC season. good luck!

Well, Nick has parted ways with the coach that took him from outside the TOP 800 to #66, just weeks after his Wimbledon QF. Simon Rea is out and.. wait for it.. Davis Cup Coach Josh Eagle and Todd Larkham are now his entourage.

I presume Tennis Australia has made a very generous deal with Kyrgios because they couldn't stomach Simon Rea, a Kiwi, raising our next ATP tour staple

Unbelievable

I dont know Simon Rea from a bar of soap but I do feel very sorry for him. Nick though wanted to move back to the ACT to be close to his family and I totally agree with that decision. Rea did a great job and I am sure he would have relocated to Canberra if he was offered the gig. I do agree with Dmitry Verdasco too the fact that he is Kiwi definitely worked against him.

Really don't see the kiwi angle on this. One can certainly feel a bit sorry for Rea, and does seem a bit risky at this point, but it seems pretty clear from all the comments about needing to square arrangements with TA that it has come from Kyrgios himself, not TA, and has been coming for a while.

The wanting to be based in Canberra thing is obviously part of it, but seems a bit more to it than that given a few comments about 'problems' in the team over the last few months. And there have been some odd things (like announcing he was going to play mixed doubles at the FO then having to cancel out before he 'had to be somewhere else').

On balance you'd have to guess this is about him having people around him he is comfortable with. That's surely a normal process when you move from being 17, just starting out on the tour, and basically told what to do; to 19, ranked in the top 100 and having some leverage...

Yep, no Nick had nothing to do with this decision, it's all TA's fault. God, give it up mate.

He wants to be able to do a lot of his training at home and this allows it. Rea was only his coach for 18 months, it wasn't like he was the single contriubtor to his success.

I did read an article about this saying his next tournament will be in a Tornto, so he is taking a bit of a break (and is he playing qualies or was he given a WC)

I'm guessing qualies - the Canadians tend to keep their wc's for their own! But on another note - is he failing the Tomic test, viz has acquired a fast car within a week of the tournament...tweeted on Friday:

Good start to the day, picked up a car on loan whilst I'm home, so pumped with it. Thanks @RobertSmithIX and @JohnMorris1982 #BigGrin

Prompted a number of not an Orange BMW/pink Ferrari responses...and a sudden focus on his rallyforbally donations! Then today a puff piece that doesn't really quite reassure in today's Canberra Times by David Polkinghorne:

"Fast cars and tennis players don't mix all the time, but you can bet on Nick Kyrgios avoiding the same pitfalls as Bernard Tomic. There are a lot of similarities between Australia's two brightest tennis stars – cars, rising profiles and fancy hairstyles. But while Tomic has been nabbed going too fast in his yellow Ferrari, Kyrgios' family is making sure he doesn't go down the same path. Kyrgios spent his first few days back in Canberra driving his sister's Hyundai i30.[b] But keen for a bit more horsepower, his management teamed up with Mercedes for the 19-year-old to drive around in a new car while he's in Australia. Tomic ran into trouble and lost his licence while driving a Ferrari and he's also been in trouble while cruising in an orange BMW. The pair aren't alone in a love of cars. Mark Philippoussis couldn't hide his affection for cars and has raced in celebrity formula one...

Nice interview with Guardian from Canberra: http://www.theguardian.com/sport/201...in?CMP=soc_568

Not really anything new, but nicely pitched, rather underplaying the odds of a ranking rise in the near future (well I suppose he could plateau, but given his year to date figures were good even before Wimbledon, more likely, barring injury, his ranking will rise to the low thirty's at least as soon as the number of matches played comes into line with that for everyone else, currently at 13 compared to 20-30 for the top group). Still, no bad thing to talk down expectations!

And did like this bit of wistful looking at the basketballers:

"Kyrgios also has family to thank for his decision to ultimately pursue tennis over basketball, his other sporting passion.

“I think my Dad was pretty big on me playing tennis so he sort of pushed me to that side,” Kyrgios says. “But I still play basketball whenever I can and I’m never going to lose my passion for it.”

He occasionally stops to admire the basketballers in action at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra and admits a desire to join in from time to time.

“When I’m down training for tennis, sometimes I go in [to the basketball courts] and just look around,” Kyrgios comments. “I’m probably no longer good enough to play with those guys as they are much taller than me and more athletic, but I’m sure I could hold my own for a little bit.”

The 19-year-old will be able indulge his love of basketball when he visits the sport’s spiritual home in August. However, with the purpose of his American trip to compete at the US Open, tennis is perhaps more likely to be at the forefront of Kyrgios’s mind."

Quick update - he is on qualifying list for Toronto.

ANd I realised that Guardian article does have something new. Over at his blog, Nick said he thought his best tennis wasn't in the Nadal match:

Quote:
I actually thought I played my best tennis in the third and fourth sets against Vesely which of course set me up for the big one against Rafa Nadal. I was asked what it felt like to hear the noise of the crowd as I walked out on Centre Court and the answer is, I couldn’t tell you! I had my headphones on so loud and was so focused that everything just blended in to one big scene of calmness.

It sounds weird to say playing Rafa and beating him in four was not my best tennis of the tournament but that is how I felt, I obviously served very well and took control of the rallies pretty much every time and am so stoked I got the win, really it was like a dream.
In the Guardian article points to that fabulous fourth set (93% first serves in) as his best:

Quote:
“As crazy as it sounds, I walked out on centre court thinking I could definitely win the match,” he says. “I knew that if I served well and played the right style of game I could pull off an upset. Especially when I was two sets to one up I really thought I just had to play one more good set to take it out. And then the fourth was probably the best tennis I’ve ever played!”
