Thanks for your well wishing! Really appreciate it. I don't usually take many pictures on these types of holidays (non-sightseeing) but I'll maybe take a few and share them. It's not as if I'll be doing much. Just playing lots of golf and tennis, lying on the beach too. Won't go near the pool or sea, though.

Enjoy Bond, I've heard some good things about it and look forward to seeing it when I'm home.

Did they win? I guess they did judging by your reaction…

Am I afraid of water? Perhaps.

I don't know, but there's a psychological block there ever since I had my 'incident'.

It's more the open sea that I don't like, with the waves. A pool is okay once in a while, just to have a bit of a swim.

Anyway, since I was out there, I decided to go take pictures for you of Gutman and some petroglyphs. I will put together a little travelog. You can follow along in the pictures as you read or if you are impatient just do it however you want.

This is called Seven Mile Canyon because it is seven miles from this canyon to the Colorado River. In the old days that was 7 very rough miles, so this was a good camp spot for wagons before they made the rest of the trip down to the river. It was also a highway for the ancient indian cultures who roamed, sometimes farmed, and hunted here. This spot where I too the pictures is at a fork in the canyon. The South Fork gently leads up to a spot where it is easy to climb out onto the plateau and then travel over to the canyons that lead to the Green River. The Green River and the Colorado River come in at angles and then join and run on together through the Grand Canyon. So, the two rivers form a triangle. Because of the number of highly significant pieces of artwork in this area, one can surmise that it was a gathering place and perhaps a site of festivals/rituals.

1. Walking toward the cliff face. This is a cliff face of windblown sandstone topped with a harder layer of river deposited sandstone. (Wingate and Kayenta formations) Water runoff creates a darker surface on the rock known as desert varnish. This is actually a living layer with minerals and bacteria. Some is brown and some is nearly black. The black kind can reflect the sky and appear a strange blue. If you notice the black part in the lower right of the cliff face, that is where we will walk.

2. These are petroglyphs of what is known as the Archaic style or sometimes Barrier Canyon style.

3. These are big horn sheep, a favorite prey for the hunters. The plant at the bottom is a fremont barberry -- it produces a bitter berry.

4. A detail from the left hand side of the panel.

5. Gutman. Gutman is so called because the middle figure of the three grouped figures has a sinuous line running from the head through the torso. This line appears to be intestines. One can't be sure what the artist intended, but this middle figure appears significant with his arms raised. The raised arms are unusual in the archaic paintings. With a very good camera, you can see the line is unbroken. I have a picture taken by a local photographer showing it in exquisite detail. All three figures are highly decorated. I enhanced the colors to show it a bit more. I just had my camera with me for photos.

6. Black and white sometimes give as different perspective.

7. The Gutman panel at more of a distance.

8. The Gutman panel in perspective with its surroundings

9. The panel disappears at a distance.

10. The cliff looking down canyon

11. The cliff looking up canyon. You can see the road that goes between the two cliffs at the left of the picture. A road has been blasted into the face of the canyon.
This is awesome. Is this the one from my postcards? And how far from Moab is it? Probably the right question is "how close".

And how preserved is this? Is there any kind of security there? Because from the photos, it does seem like it's out in the open for everyone to see and touch.

Thanks for sharing, stary. But I see what you're doing , I still can't visit you yet. But I will one day And now I can even drive the car and you can rest

Also, I loved the black and white, it really does give it a whole other perspective.

You can do it. Imagine how great it will be to be there. At least that will make the first flight easier. And then you will be missing Jr and Mr Lee so much, the return flight will pass very quickly as well.

Here is a lovely picture from the Sego Canyon area. Maybe I will go there and take some pictures. That was an area where the panels were defaced by modern man, but they had some restoration specialist come out and clean them. In doing so, they uncovered some other art too.

It's old, but I think not nearly as old as the cave paintings in France and other places in Europe. That stands to reason since humans were late to arrive to this continent.
We have ones in Portugal too.

If I went to sleep now, I would never have a hope of getting up in time to leave. So it's no longer an option, and was never my intention anyway.

Err, it would be a disgrace to Ian Fleming if a Bond film strayed away from that 'feeling'. They're all going to be similar, but slightly different at the same time. I guess some people can get bored of it. But yes I know what you mean.

I myself am not so much of a fan. I'll watch them, but I must say I found the two previous Daniel Craig Bond films pretty dull. However my sources tell me this (Skyfall) was a bit more of a success.

Weird question, but do you watch English/American films dubbed in Portuguese, or subtitled in Portuguese? Or is it a mixture?

I don't quite fancy Daniel Craig. He doesn't give the Bond vibe previous actors did. So yeah, that is always a downside.

Sam Mendes is very likely my favorite director, so I had high expectations. He did not let me down, although it made me realize a few things about us (Sam and I).

Couldn't your mother wake you up?

Never seen any of his other films, so can't comment on whether he's that great or not. His record seems good.

Daniel Craig just isn't James Bond!

I'm not fussed, though. I'll watch these films to be entertained. It's not a genre I am emotionally connected to like others, however.

Well, she could, but I don't think I could ever get to sleep in the first place. I go to sleep at about 2am each day, it's what I'm used to, so it would have been hard to break that cycle for one early-ish night. I'm not bothered, though. Sleep in the car and sleep on the plane.

Yeah, indeed.

I think for live action films, subtitles is the only way to get it across well.

I don't mind Japanese anime films dubbed in English, however.
