Berdych hits the ball earlier and has more compact and effortless strokes compared to the likes of Del Potro and Soderling. Federer plays very fast and sometimes the last ones doesn't have enough time to unleash their power shots against the swiss player.

Berdych is difficult for Federer for the same reason as he has been difficult for most of the top guys....because he is a good player.

Like others have said...he can get a good read on Fed's serve and heavily punish the 2nd....and can often be the first to get power on the ball putting Fed on the back foot...and the power of shot to Fed's backhand.

At a risk of the jinx, I think Fed will be fine this time. You can usually guage things as to how well Fed has been playing....and this year he has ben constantly robust all around his game. Berdych tended to nab him when Fed was going through more flaky patches.

Federer leads 11-4 in their head to head. How does berdych give federer any more problems than roger gives rafa on clay?

Not sure what all this fuss is about. Berdych, like other big hitters, are always problematic for any top player since they can just get red hot and the opponent can do nothing about it.

I mean remember, Berdych was on his way to becoming a Rafa-killa early on in their careers. He was leading the H2H pretty convincingly. But after that match in 2006 where Berdych beat Rafa and hushed the Spanish crowd causing them to boo, he all of a sudden became Rafa's pet.. I'm not sure why. Yes, Berdych went into a slight slump from 2007 to pretty much 2010, but after 2010 when he got the confidence after beating Federer in Miami, he has still been unable to regain any sort of real belief against Rafa. It is quite ironic considering Berdych never looked that confident beating Federer before 2010 (bar Athens 2004) yet his mental strength against Rafa/Roger reveresed since then.

And like others have pointed, other big hitters/servers like Soderling and Tsonga have had success against Federer (and against Djokovic/Nadal as well) so it isn't like it is just against Federer. Big hitters ALWAYS have a chance against ANY player regardless of style or ranking. Look at Rosol for example. So Berdych's success isn't perplexing in any way, but the confusing part for me is why he has such belief against Federer the past few years but when it matters most against Rafa, he doesn't possess the same fearlessness against Nadal like pre-2007.

But as far as technical aspects of Berdych, it is actually a bit strange why he has had a little more success against Federer than someone like Soderling. Yes, Berdych volleys well, but IMO Soderling's skills at net are a bit underrated and Robin has a much better and more reliable serve (on both the first and second). Returning game can't really tell them apart, and movement as well it isn't really that big of a gap. I mean I guess it seems Berdych occassionally reads Federer's shots like a book sometimes, but that is something intangible anyways.

Federer brings out the best in Berdych... but 11-4 head to head speaks for itself.

I'm no Fakervic fan but he needs to save tennis, sadly tree trunk legs will be fresh. Interesting he's never questioned...

Whenever Berdych spots Roger on his side of the draw he plays his heart out to get at him. If he were on either Nole's or Murray's quarter he'd have lost to some mug player by now. He loves being able to blow Federer off the court. Fed doesn't have the relentless defensive game that forces Tomas to go for too much in frustration. He knows Fed will try to match him for power but in that scenario there's always going to be one winner. You saw it at Wimbledon 2010. Tomas is way too powerful.

On fast, low bouncing conditions, Fed can still trump these guys with angles and variations.
Interesting. It seems that federer in his absolute peak (2004-2007) was never blown off the court like he has nowadays (Tsonga wimby, berdych wimby, soder rg etc etc).

I mean safin did beat him at the AUS, but i don't consider safin to be a ball basher at all.

Fed is also a very tactically gifted player and he benefits playing predicatable players where he can easily read the serve and the groundgame. Berdych is a tricky player to read. Sometimes going ultra-aggressive to the net, sometimes grinding it out from the baseline, sometimes going for broke, sometimes taking pace off. Much better for Roger vs someone like Ferrer where he knows the opponents game exactly and knows what to expect on important points like BPs.

Even if his H2H looks good against most big hitters, he knows if the big hitter catches fire he's done. happened vs delpo in USO, vs Soderling in RG, vs Tsonga in Wimbledon.........vs Berdych next in USO?
I think federer just doesn't like unpredictable players. Look at gilles simon.. he grinds fed to death and chases down everything... but he randomly, in a bi-polar manner, goes for broke sometimes.

In fact, it seems as if federer is the only one who handles the big "on fire"

Agreed. Of the big 3, i would say federer handles the "on fire" big hitters the best. He almost always makes it a 4-5 set tight affair. Nadal got blown off vs tsonga del potro and soderling. Federer took it to 5 vs tsonga/potro.

Good post. Big hitters always have a chance. And yes it's odd that Berdych has more confidence vs Federer these days than vs Nadal. Berdych's game is almost perfect to beat Nadal. He likes hitting up high and is one of the best guys on the tour at punishing high bouncing balls or weak second serves with both his forehand and backhand.

Also agree that it's strange that Soderling hasn't had more success vs Fed. Early in his career you could tell Soderling had the shotmaking to trouble Fed but he lost the plot and all confidence vs Federer. They've played like 14 TBs and Sod's only won 2 of those. In reality he should've won more matches.

Seems it's a lot about confidence for the big hitters vs the top3. Berdych right now seem to have confidence vs Fed but lack some confidence vs Nadal. That lack of confidence shows in TBs and on BPs. Berdych in a TB vs a top3 always feels like a question of time before he blows up and hits 3 UEs in a row. A smart top3 uses this to send deep groundstrokes or low slices that Berdych still wants to be aggressive with. Usually ends with terrible fail

Since 2010, Federer has played something like 225 matches and has been overpowered to defeat five or six times! And most of those were four or five setters. Given the physical power present in modern tennis, that is not a bad record!

With every month that goes by it should become easier and easier for someone like Berdych to overpower an aging Federer...Quite frankly it would be quite a scandal if Fed were to overpower someone like Berdych in his absolute prime.
