When I was a kid, I remember one my neighbors dying from the same thing Shaun White has. I just can't remember what it's called right now.
But Shaun White isn't fazed in the least... I guess he never remembers having any problems.

Mardy though.. considering his surgery was just last year... or not that long ago relatively speaking, I would think he's very sensitive to how he feels...
I think it's hard for somebody to like Justin to relate to that fear...

Maybe Mardy came back too soon?
My comment was not a diss of Marty by any means. It's understandable his concern. However, it also seems pretty clear that is was questionable to try and come back so soon. But that decision i can kinda see as well. He has a very limited career left given his age and it was prime money season for him. He wont have the luxury of multi million dollar endorsements in his retirement, so he's got to maximize for he and family while he's still playing. There are no great ATP pensions he will have to rely on.

Oh no... I didn't think you were dissing Mardy at all.

No.. on the contrary, I agree with you. I just think it's got to be scary to be a professional athlete with a heart problem.

I agree.

It's one thing to say "the horror/brutal draw for Djokovic/Federer continues.." when they faced Young/Dutra Silva,

but to keep saying that when their opponent had to withdraw due to health reason is just tasteless/vulgar/uncivilised.

Can't expect more from Noletards though...

Hope Mardy is okay. Heart problems are nothing to scoff at.

Wow, this was unexpected. I hope that nothing is wrong with his heart. Fish needs to reevaluate his career, though. Tennis is not worth dying for, that is for sure. He can't continue putting himself in stressful situations, and we all know how stressful tennis can get.

As someone with a lifelong heart condition, you do NOT screw around when your having a heart issue. I hope he figures out what is wrong with him and gets it fixed (if it can be fixed).

IT's not always so clear cut for a professional athlete. There are bills to be paid. He's not of the league who's made enough to live on for rest of his life.

Just posting some of the classier comments here. There are plenty to choose. Some will probably have other nominees.

Like, harden the fuck up?

Here is a link to a NY Times article. It seems the most comprehensive of the articles written.

Poor Mardy. I fear if he has cardiomyopathy he should retire or he'll risk serious heart failure.

Today it essentially seems he had something similar to a panic attack given his nervousness of the occasion and his condition.

Gimelstob threw him under the bus this afternoon:

http://tennis.si.com/2012/09/03/mard...en-withdrawal/
Quote:
Here’s what Gimelstob had to say about Fish:

“He’s struggling with the stress of trying to reach his potential. This tournament means so much to him. It all just compounded in his withdrawal today.

“Is the physical presupposing the mental or is the mental presupposing the physical? It is symbolic that he’s playing one of the biggest matches of his career against the greatest of all time, where expectations should be at an all-time low and he couldn’t even take the court. So he’s depressed, he’s disappointed, he’s sad, and he’s stressed.

“Pressure is a privilege, and Mardy Fish needs to embrace that.”
I don't care for Gimelstob & ordinarily wouldn't pay too much attention to anything he says, but Jim Courier said basically the same thing on Saturday during the match vs. Simon. Courier said that Fish was mentally fragile and couldn't handle the expectations that came along with being the #1 American and this led to his panic attacks.

I am no Gimelstob fan myself. He usually annoys the hell out of me. But his comments today seemed like the real thing and probably not far from the truth. I have far more respect for Courier and they essentially say the same thing. As much as we can speculate on here, fact is they both know him personally and direct contact, so you cant completely disregard the comments.

What was so unclassy about Kat's comment?

Sad for Fish that he had to withdraw. His condition sounds like a really tricky one for a professional athlete to have. I hope he can play Davis Cup somehow; it would be amazing if the Americans can pull off the victory.
