Default Del Potro Believes...

Quote:
“They are always the favorite to win these kind of tournament, but they are not impossible to beat,” said del Potro who lost to Federer at the 2012 Australian Open and 2009 Roland Garros. [David] Ferrer can beat all of them; [John] Isner can beat all of them; me if I have good matches also. But they are of course the favorite to win this tournament. It's not easy to beat them in five sets, especially here in the US Open, but we will try.”
Unlike Berdych and Tsonga, I think Delpo's head is in the right place.
This is the mentality of a grand slam contender.

I think this is what has made the difference between him and Berdych/Tsonga this year.
He has, for the most part performed better than Berdych/Tsonga against the top crowd this year and I think this mentality hasn't hurt him.

What do you guys think?

Is it the right mindset? Or is he being too cocky?

This is why I love Del Po. The guy has a champion's heart and mentality. That is what's key. Not sure about the Ferrer part though.

Not much to do with this year for him, but yeah certainly it was that mindset help him win the US in 09. He believed he could. That's proably why he's the only other player to win a GS in years now.

'Ferrer can beat all of them'

Roger would disagree (and Nadal as well when he's back)

I didn`t see this year in a lot of matches again Federer that he really believes. I don`t care about views that much, the main words are said on court.

Ferer and Isner can beat them in slams? Only if injured maybe, even then they will find a way to lose.

He's actually delivered a GS tile, so he has more credibility then those he mentions.

Positive thinking is very important. He beat them all on multiple occasions so I don't see why he couldn't do it again.

Exactly. Thank you Del Potro. This is the mindset of a champion. Believing he can get the win.

This is why Delpo has a slam, and Tsonga and Berdych don't.

After what he did in 2009 he has every right to believe that. In fact, whats the point of getting out of bed in the morning if you dont believe in yourself? Just to pick up a pay cheque? ... Not all bad mind you, but still.

Ferrer and Isner

While JMDP has indeed the right attitude, it has little to do with why he has a Slam/done better against the top 3 than Tsonga/Berdych. The fact is he's a considerably better player than those two. He knows that, when healthy, he's right up there with the current top 3 (even after wrist surgery and an injury-filled 2012, he's probably the fifth best player in the world at the moment), which is why he shows a level of confidence Tsonga and Berdych don't. Jo and Tomas getting a Slam is dependant on many factors, JMDP adding another one to his tally is only contingent on his health (which is a big if considering it's JMDP, but still).

But not sure about the Ferrer part Probably he didn't want to be cocky saying that he is the only one who can beat top 4 in GSs; which, let's face it, it's true if he's 100% healthy.
