Who is the Most Overachiever in the Last Decade?
This thread is inspired by http://www.menstennisforums.com/showthread.php?t=148471
For me it's Lleyton Hewitt.
His heart carried him where his natural or technical talent alone couldn't.

Lleyton Hewitt for sure. Montanes, Robredo, Stepanek, Youzhny, and probably Roddick as well.
Ferrer will doubtless be mentioned but I don't really think so, his game isn't flashy but he chokes far too often to be considered one.

Re: Who is the Most Overachiever in the Last Decade?
It depends on what you consider to overachieve. Is achieving more than you were expected at the beginning of your career? Or achieving more than your natural talent would get you??
One may consider Federer and overachiever. I don't think anyone would think in 2002 that he would win 17 slams, be ranked 300 weeks 1, reach 23 slam semis in a row, etc....

Re: Who is the Most Overachiever in the Last Decade?
What is natural talent? Not a rhetorical question; it is just that it confuses me when people go on about it as if it is a clearly defined/definable thing. Did I miss a memo?

Re: Who is the Most Overachiever in the Last Decade?
Gaudio takes the cake. Yes, he was a good player on clay but he was never tipped to be a Slam winner for a reason, he should be winning one in any conditions but he did.
Ferrer, Boredo and to a lesser extent Hewitt come to mind as well.

Re: Who is the Most Overachiever in the Last Decade?
Nadal- shouldn't have a career slam
Boredo- shouldn't have a TMS
Troicki- shouldn't have got within a million miles of top 10

Boredo is a good choice.
Gaudio may be the slam winner with the worst career, but he could be consider an underachiever also. He definitely had talent to achieve more on clay, but he was a complete headcase. Sometimes it seemed he was insane on court.

Re: Who is the Most Overachiever in the Last Decade?
Gaudio was talented but winning big clay titles for him wasn't exactly underachieving, sure he had Coria, JCF, Guga and Moya among a few others hanging around during his peak clay years but on his day he could do unthinkable things on a clay court.
Calleri if we're talking about underachiever on a particular surface (clay), that guy could get red hot about twice a year but when he did he was explosive (JCF in the DC in Spain, Hewitt at the USO, Chela at Kitzi)

Yes, Calleri when he was on was could hit winners from all over the place. In that match against Hewitt he hit like 70 winners. It was insane.
He also destroyed Agassi at Miami in 2004 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xWwocRdlsI Another fantastic performance.
