Good question I think he'd still retire because he said one he played his 1st round that he would know whether he'd retire or not. And despite him winning, he still knew he should retire so losing would only make it more decisive

i don't get the question. So are you asking if he lost to Venus or Serena?

The reason why he retired was because he couldn't keep up with top players anymore. So i think he would have had.

One has to assume he was set on retiring, but it is a unique how he called in mid-tournament. Hewitt mentioned it. Fed said there's no rule on how you retire. But never quite seen that before. Wonder if he didn't want to take away from Kim's announced retirement, or if he didn't definitely make up his mind until he actually played the first round.

If he'd said something before R1, it would have been embarrassing for him to lose to that kid, and embarrassing for the kid to be the one to have ended Roddick's career (probably only to lose in the next match). The kid is American so Roddick doesn't want to undermine him.

He probably would have announced it in his post-match press conference and the USTA would've arranged some time before one of the 7 pm matches later in the tournament for Roddick to come out and wave goodbye to the crowd (Remember how Sampras came out?).

Let's not over analyze. It's been planed for quite some time to announce on his birthday. He told folks up to a year ago this was his last Open, and you knew at Wimbledon as well he was done. This is no surprise or something unplanned.

I think he would have announced retirement right after the match.

What is it with MTF and members calling anyone under 25 a kid? Williams is 21, he's no child. Roddick was lifting the US Open trophy on his 21st birthday. No need to emphasise his age constantly and unreasonably at that. In 10 years, MTF members will be proclaiming 30 year men as 'kids' because the top 50 will be occupied by those receiving their old-age pension.

The older one barely has WTA status...

Roddick losing in round one would have been terrible.

Fight one Andy, tennis fans are behind you.
