Default Where will/would you like your favourite player to retire?

Roddick retiring at the Open makes perfect sense - he's an American, it's where he won his only major, why play on after this event. Got me to thinking where other top players may choose to bow out. Of the top 4:

Federer - I think he'll stick around till WTF, no matter which year he retires. He won't fall out of the top 8 and will retire as a top player so why not play one of his most successful tournaments? Other possible options - Basel (too small I think); Wimbledon (potentially - but surely he'd still play the US Open..).

Nadal - No idea really. Imagine he'd want to play all the majors in his final year but have a hard time thinking that the US Open would be his last event. Also can't imagine his last event being the indoor WTF event. Rio 2016? If he somehow turns up to play there then that'll definitely be the last one and if it's on clay then it would be a fitting venue.

Djokovic - US Open. Has to be a hardcourt event; it's a slam which has a party atmosphere and suits his personality. Would be great to see him end it either on Ashe - where he's had epic wins - or perhaps in Melbourne, his most successful slam, but not as epic (barring this year's SF and F). Hope it's the Open, whenever it is.

Murray - Wimbledon. Think he'll play for a long time and when he does wind down it'll be the grass at home where he'd want to say farewell... Other option - US Open.

Others:

Hewitt - surely Aus Open 2013? Can't see much hope beyond that. Hope he gets a great exit on Rod Laver Arena.
JCF - I expect it to be in Valencia this year.
Robredo - Barcelona next year? Then again he's only just got back from surgery and may want to keep going longer - play through RG at least and see how he feels.
Haas - I remember watching his Aus Open match vs Nadal this year and thinking it was his final year on tour - even Nadal clearly thought that given the applause for Tommy at the end and how Tommy acknowledged it. But now Haas looks the best he has in years and suddenly has fire again! So hopefully at least another year on tour. Think he'll end it at the US Open - an American event.

Robredo definitely isn't retiring next year.

Hewitt will stick around for another full season I think, after getting back inside the top 100.

I think Haas will finish in Germany somewhere, Halle maybe.

I think Ferrero will go at Valencia too.

If Roger has qualified for the WTF in the year he retires I think he'll play it otherwise Basel seems right. It's after all the slams are done and in the place he was born.

Nadal maybe Madrid (I jest)

Djokovic has the Novak aka Serbian Open....

WTF. It doesn`t matter who exactly. It means that player finishes career on top.

as long as Murray has won a slam, otherwise he can go on till he dies

the way Henman did it was pretty good, retire at Wimbledon after a Davis Cup rubber

I'm no Fakervic fan but he needs to save tennis, sadly tree trunk legs will be fresh. Interesting he's never questioned...

Regarding Federer, I think he will deal with it professionally not sentimentally, even being an emotional person. I don't think he will drag his career outside the top 10 before he admits he can't compete any more, like other players. We have seen that he can judge his condition better than us and that he can improve. When he feels he can't keep it up, I think he will say at some point, "This/Next season will be my last season", meaning when the season ends at the WTF. Who knows for sure?

Personally, I'd like him to retire in 2020. From know till then, he should have:

- defeated Nadal at RG... twice, and won it 3 times,
- had a positive H2H against him,
- won 25 GSs (including a CYGS),
- had 378 weeks at #1,
- won Gold in Rio,
- won Davis Cup,
- played in Young's/Tomic's retirement match.

Good thread. Murray will definitely call it a day at Wimbledon...possibly aged 34.

Fed @ the WTF if he has managed to qualify, otherwise Basel. 2014.

Rafa - Not sure really. Possibly Wimbledon. 2017.

Nole USO or WTF. 2018.

Hewitt - AO or Wimbledon 2013.

Isner USO 2016.

Del Potro - USO 2020.

He'll definitely retire in Argentina, probably Davis Cup if possible.

Federer at Wimbledon (hopefully winning it one last time). That's his true home. He shot to fame as a Wimbledon champion and it would be poetic if he ends as one.
Anyone with me?

I don't think so. For me Wimbledon is still synonymous with Sampras, more than Federer (and Sampras' last match there was on Court 2 - what a fail by the organizers!). Winning it again won't be easy as I think Murray/Nadal will be back in the hunt. And I also think he'd want to play Basel at least one more time the year he retires, so Wimbledon wouldn't be the last tournament.

Nalbandian will definitely be in Argentina or a DC tie. He's not done well enough at any particular tournament often enough to have ties to it.

Nadal at Wimbledon is actually conceivable. He'll limit himself more to grass and clay in the future anyway and will be less competitive on hardcourt quicker than on natural surfaces. May go for a final clay court season and then grass, which he loves, and bow out on Centre Court - the scene of his greatest triumph. Actually can see that appealing to him, rather than trying to play Rogers Cup and the US Open etc. at the end with battered knees. Hope for Rio 2016 or Wimbledon 2017.

I wonder do you actually believe in this or simply want to happen? Rafa`s career in under issue already. Yep, he isn`t going to retire tomorrow, but all these fairy tales about 4-5 years in front of him - man, be realistic for yourself.

The thread asked where i would like him to retire. And i would like him to retire after winning a last Wimbledon. It's not a question of logic only of individual desire.
