Go out swinging Andy, how cool would it be to just unleash that old serve/forehand (his real one, not the fake puffy one of today) combo for one more match/tournament. Absolutely manhandling Tomic

Yet another one of my favourites retires early.

Very depressing how his career panned out after such a promising start. It was obvious this summer he didn't have the heart to keep fighting anymore. Such a shame when you consider all the older players still going.

I'm definitely surprised by this. He probably wasn't content with being just a top 30 player. Still, he could have probably kept it going for a few more years, ala Haas and Stepanek.

Andy in prime form in this interview.

Would you like a dream run here? "We'll see. It'd be nice if I had a choice." LOL

Oh and American tennis this is Andy passing the torch. Time for someone to grab it.

But I hear you, only Borg at the USO was so close and yet so far as Andy at Wimbledon over the years. That lose was heartbreaking

Shame he never got his Wimbledon, he'd have deserved one for sure.

It's also a shame the US never gave him the respect he deserved as his career was an excellent one that most would kill for. Not every player has a Sampras, Agassi, McEnroe or Connors career. It's a tough sport out there.

Best of luck for the future Andy.

Very surprising news. Just last week he confirmed that he would play Delray Beach next year. I wonder what changed his mind so suddenly?

Sad to see Andy call it quits but it's his call and he knows what's best for him. I'll always remember him winning his first slam and those heartbreaking Wimbledon losses. He's one of my favorite players of all time and I've always enjoyed his candid personality and sense of humor. Good luck in retirement and thanks for the memories Andy.

OMG!!!...THIS US OPEN.......first Kim and now this....

i'm not a huge fan...but always found to be a great person and is funny as hell....part of me thinks he is trying to take the spotlight away from Clijsters....(i know i'm horrible to think that)...but still, this news is gonna difficult to swallow...at least i knew Clijsters was gonna go after this, so i could enjoy and appreciate watching her more and eased into her second retirement...but this was soooooooo sudden that i just can't...

He has been outside top 20 for a while. Maybe It's time to retire

No surprise at all

I think James Blake would maybe go to join retired party soon

Will be missed but I wish him the best of luck.
10 years maybe, far from 15.

I'm not really fussed about his retirement. His change of game style will always remain one of the biggest mysteries to me and his attitude towards lower ranked players was abysmal.

A character nevertheless and an entertaining player during his prime.
