Rafa wins this. Especially on the fh side. Part of what makes his shots so ridiculous is that even if the opponent guesses correctly, he still has to hit a volley against a high rpm ball. Even the best volleyers flub those, or hit a weak reply. That's why McEnroe was so freaked out when he practiced with Rafa. The sheer difficulty of executing against that type of spin.
Hewitt is the next best. Totally unmatched accuracy and anticipation.
Federer in his prime was also crazy.
IMO Murray has a better passing shot than Novak.
Going further back.. Kuerten, Agassi, Chang, Courier, Bruguera, Wilander, Borg etc
Hewitt passing shots are not on the same level as Nadal's. In fact, he lacked the proper technique and power to generate sick passes, instead relying on WTA lobs, which always got commentators to jerk off like crazy.
This is evidence you only started following tennis 2005 onwards.
I don't like Nadal but have to say it's him. Regarding Novak, I always thought his passing shots are the worst of the four and I say this as a fan.
Not sure about that but his lobs are definitely the best.

To a large extent, certainly previously, it was the return of serve and passing shot combination which was essential when serve and volley was far more common. It was the combined skills that made Hewitt the most effective player I ever saw against serve and volley.
Possibly Nadal has the best passing shots, but his lesser return of serve means to many serve and volley players he would be less of a threat than Hewitt, Murray and even Djokovic.
So yes Nadal has the best passing shots, but would not have been among the biggest threats to a serve and volley player.

If my life depends on next passing shot i would rather hit Nadal's backhand and pray than any of Djokovic's side.
Still Borg tops them both. Watching what he was doing on 70' grass which was more like a mud against one of best volleyers of all time wondering myself if he would be able to hit them closed eyes in present time with modern equipment and perfect surfaces. The fact that slam win would easier came to Murray than nerves to Borg in tight situation also playing a part in it

What a clown you are.. Hewitt was facing serve and volleyers who would get huge serves in so he had to get great returns into play and then try to pass. Rafa's main rivals don't have enormous serves so he doesn't have to hit a good return at all (he was never a great returner anyways) and his passing shots occur at the very least after a brief rally. Hewitt had no time. The guys he faced were at the net instantly, he couldn't work the point to be a favorable position like Rafa.
It's Nadal. His passing shots are one of the more spectacular parts of his game.
Yes, definitely. This and his defensive lob are so frustrating for those aggressive-minded player. His passing shots helped him greatly during AO 2009 Final. Without this skill, Federer wouldn't be so terrified playing him.

Actually, those three are about equal in that department but nowhere as great as Nadal. Depends on who you're playing also. It's definitely easier to hit passing shots against Roddick than Federer.
Those confident volleys in Wimbledon and Cincinnati, I wonder if Federer could do it as successfully or would play the same way if it's Nadal on the other side of the net.

Everyone hits passing shots with a lot of spin - it's not like Rafa is the only one who can generate lots of spin, just he uses more spin on his normal groundstrokes than everyone else.
Volleyers can easily deal with volleying a quickly dipping ball, because it's what they always face.
Unless you're Albert Ramos.
