Until today, the highest ranked player Novikov had beaten this year was Reid Carleton at 761. In fact he's only ever had one win against a top 500 player (Matteo Marrai) so this was a huge upset.

The difference is that Sock was reaching QF's in challengers prior to the US Open with wins over solid journeymen like Phau or De Voest. Plus he was a good junior and won the Junior US Open in 2010.

Novikov didn't do anything close to Sock was doing last year.

He did have a top 500 win, he beat Matteo Marrai in 2011. Nobody has seen the match so it's not fair to jump to any conclusions. Of course Jerzy should have had enough experience to beat him but for all we know, Novikov is an undiscovered talent.

No excuse for this loss, but Jerzy had a terrible summer HC season,so this isn't such a huge surprise as the odds would suggest.

if he's 18 years old and had still yet to crack the top 1000 odds lean more in favor of this being a one off

but if im wrong im wrong and so be it

Novikov plays #3 for UCLA! Still a college player. Im pretty shocked by this result, he wasnt even really a standout.

Yeah, let's see how well he does against Benneteau or Rochus. A second win and entering Top 500 could be extremely good morale for him, although Occam's Razor suggests it's a one off.

Maybe college did him wonders. Great win for Dennis even if Janowicz didn't play well. Good luck to him in the next round, but I think his journey will end there.

He can't take the money unless he turns pro.
