i think for a living he is insulting players on twitter and he's not bad at it, but to keep proportions, his distance to banned MTF member dylan24 is as big as stakhovsky's distance to federer

So there was some truth in that article after all. Most of it was made up but it was worth a thread. Not sure it had to be this long though  . |

If someone's criteria for a strong major consists of tradition and dates, then I'm not sure they genuinely follow tennis. The past year or so aside, the Australian Open has easily been one of the most exciting tournaments of the season. Its surface once lended itself to the broadest variety of styles. Accordingly, it has had great matches from the tournament's onset, plenty of epics to look back on, surprising runs against talented players, and plenty of exciting aspects.
It'd be a shame if it were to revert back to its former state after such a great climb in tennis over the past twenty-something years.

It's interesting how the AO's boss is voicing the same concerns members on this website are. He is calling for the increase in Futures and Challengers prize money and points out GS prize money has been on the up for some time now.
Here is what he says which obviously makes a lot of sense but I don't expect Nadal and Djokovic to start fighting for this cause any time soon.

Tennis is a very interesting parallel to what's been going on in the "real" economy in the last 30 years or so, which wealth for those at the top of the sport rising dramatically while those lower down the food chain find their earnings are stagnant, if not actually declining in real terms. And it's not like this has led to a healthy global economy. I doubt it's doing much good for the long term health of tennis either.

Why single out Nadal and Djokovic?! Haven't heard Fed talk about challenger prize money and he's the one who's now the President for the third successive term - if he wants all the power then he should take the lead.  Neither Nadal nor Djokovic are on the Council and they have no more responsibility to speak out than Murray, Ferrer, Tsonga or any other top players - all these guys are multi-millionaires and the future of the sport should matter to all of them.
Good on Tiley - he's brought up the main issue. Everyone has to play Futures and Challengers - it should be a viable revenue stream for players and should have greater exposure overall. Places like the UK could certainly advertise Challengers better and get local clubs involved to boost crowds - there is no visibility at all of the Challenger level even though it is rightfully the breeding ground for future talent (as well as the only place where some professionals will ever play). Why not sell it as an opportunity for you to see the next Murray, Nadal or Federer? All this attention on Shanghai etc. but no focus on places where there is an interest in tennis which just isn't harnessed properly.... |
