Default Re: US Open-court speed

does anyone else think the court speed was slowed down slightly from 2008 to 2009?
here are federer-djokovic match highlights from both years to illustrate this.

2008: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0djaUG-6ijc
2009: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjJLhDN1b64

I dunno, it just seems like in 2008 the points were finished quicker and in 2009 there were way more rallies. Or am I just seeing things?

Using Federer as an example is hardly fair, he's not your average top finesse player. I personally feel it will be a long long time before we see a #1 using 1HBH after him.

Wow, if that's true now I'm really interested to see how the tennis looks like in the big boys' matches.

MONEY.....

The ATP wants more of it....

Similar surfaces = same guy wins everywhere = tennis stars are born = more attention to the game = MORE MONEY

Slow surfaces = longer matches = more TV time = "fake" epicness (2012 AO final) = more advertising = MORE MONEY

How many guys have won slams in all 3 different surfaces until Roger's generation. In 2 years we had two, Roger in 2009 and nadal in 2010. We have murray reaching all 4 slams semis in the same year, djokovic reaching all slam finals, ferrer (weaponless mug) doing well in Wimbledon,....

Because Federer is special. Hes the exception.

Its similar to a conversation I had the other day about the death of the one handed backhand. Someone again pointed out that Federer still uses the one handed, and hes the world number 1. but I pointed out once again that hes the exception. Hes actually the only top 10 player who uses it (Tsonga only occasionally uses the one handed backhand).

I don't know if it's surface homogenisation or not (but I'd love to see some kind of objective measure introduced). Maybe it's having a player of Roger's quality around that pushes his younger contemporaries to an all-round game that was previously unneccessary. Either way, I personally prefer the current situation to the situation in the 90s where the great clay players could hardly even get a seeding at Wimbledon (didn't Moya even withdraw in protest one year?)

The slowness/homogenization has been a detriment to Federer's game. He's #1 at age 31 because he's THAT great. Who knows how great his net game would be if the grass was the same as in 01 when he played Sampras. That grass forces the players to improve their all-round game because Wimbledon is that important. Now it's just ball-bashing. It's only now that he's older and lost a step that he's incorporated more net play and drop shot to end the point quicker because he doesn't have the foot speed to stay with the youngsters at the baseline. Before he just went with what gave him the best chance of winning - baseline, defensive play.

It's a pity because the net game will soon be a dinosaur. The older players/coaches will die out/retire, and there'll be no one to teach the kids/teens the net game. It's just like society - sameness/tolerance is emphasized and diversity not so much. But just like genetics, it's the variety and not the sameness that makes for a superior product.

It doesn't exactly need to be a perfect world to have surface variation. It's not difficult to implement physically, look at 2000.

The problem is money.

I play here throughout the summer and went to qualies on Tuesday - even by recent standards, the courts are playing slower this year

They slowed it down last year with no reason, USO was so beautiful with its fast hardcourt surface, but I've heard recently that it's back to its fast feat.
