Fed misses lots of tournaments regardless, and more clay court oriented players don't have the pressure to attend hardcourt masters. Tsonga, Djokovic, Berdych, Del Potro all showed up as well because they can't afford to throw aways masters on their best surface.

Anyway, I don't think he is seriously injured and is just giving himself a chance to defend Cincy.
Still he could've withdrawn on Sunday. I mean it's not like you aren't allowed to withdraw from a tournament due to fatigue / personal reasons. And even if he got a money-penalty for that (of course in the rankings he'd get a penalty-zero) , I think money doesn't matter for Murray, he should've earned quite a bit so far during his career.

Wish he'd never gone there! Glad he withdrew (no point in risking his USO chances) though had he withdrawn before the tournament Grisha might have received a lucky loser spot

Not massively surprised - he always takes a little while for his left knee to cope with the transition from grass to hard, normally he starts that much earlier. This time he couldn't. Hopefully he'll be ready to go in Cincy.

I just think he wanted to play a match and see how he felt and then decide if he wanted to continue. I think he will be fine come Cincy.

No, they show up because this is a mandatory tournament.

Nadal skipped it citing injury. Federer skipped it because he's allowed to by the rules given his age and number of matchs on tour.

They'd get a 0 pointer if they withdrew with no valid reason.

this was andy's plan all along. play one match, not get the 10k penalty and then withdraw if he won. for people in the know, this decision was made the day after he won the olympics.

It would be okay if he won it and he probably will, but they should cancel it just to be on the safe side. Nobody should win this title if they can't get near a MS1000 title under normal circumstances.
