Btw, a couple of threads about 14 year olds on GM right now
I've gone through a few youtube videos of him playing, tough to comment on his play style from it, but people often comment on him calling him a pusher so there must be at least some truth in it.

What's the other thread?

So what if he is a pusher, it takes a lot of skills to keep the ball in the court. For a small 14 y.o., he doesn't have power to blow his bigger opponents away. He is going to do what he can do to win; his results speak for itself. Anyway, here is a description of his game from an opponent:

Quote:
"He definitely makes you think," Krueger said. "He's got incredible potential--I don't that I've ever seen a player like this, maybe Donald Young--and I think he has a chance to maybe do what Donald did. If he keeps going, he'll do very well. I don't know how to describe his game. A lot of slices, drop shots, lobs, just a lot of kind of nothing balls that make you create a lot. He doesn't miss much and can pull the trigger all of a sudden. I think I did well just to hang in there as well as I could."

Kind words from Mitchell but comparing young players to Donald always evokes mixed feelings

I know how you feel . Hopefully, they will develop him well and not rush things. One thing for sure though, he has a lot of heart and determination that Donald lacks.

I thought so too, but Singh lost to Darian King. Darian King barely beat Robert Rotaru and Hugo Di Feo in Canada, both unranked, Di Feo 16 years old. King bageled Singh. Two other quarterfinalists aren't even ranked. Two more are outside the top 1200.

I love following the US Futures events, but some of them are really weak.

Getting a ranking point at 14 years old is rare, but so is drawing a 15 year old wildcard with no ranking in your very first professional match.

Yeah I agree. Maybe the weakest US future of the year so far.

Agreed, it is a shame that they drew each other. Instead of getting experience with older players, they ended up against someone whom they played and practiced with on many occasions. Same situation with Alexander Zverev drawing his brother at the Dallas Challenger .

Kozlov wont be a tall player, if he grows to be 1.80 it might not be tall enought in modern tennis but he seems more destined to be around 1.75 or something. He is not behind hitting puberty like some videos of him 13-years old has shown but he is late in the growing spur.

His game might look like Tomic or Young, lacks aggressiveness to dominate. I dont know how far the kid can go, certanly there will be open room for anyone trying to break throught in 4-5 years but I dont think he has it in him to dominate the tour, at the very best something like Hewitt is his fullfilled potential.

I meant the USTA Junior Circuit (includes some ITFs). A lot of them don't have the money to travel and prefer to stay in the country and play whatever it is available to them. A majority of those who play Junior ITFs usually train with the USTA or attend high profile academies.

I'll be happy if he can have a decent career.

On the first point, you're hilariously misinformed.
If you look at the pics from this week of him standing next to other players, he's probably already near 1.75. He is shaking hands with Daniel Nguyen at the net, who is listed at 5'10 and is probably about 1.78. And Stefan looks taller than him. And he is only fourteen, so the question is not will he be undersized but how tall will he end up?

On the second point, the idea that you need to be a Federer like offensive juggernaut to be a great player is silly. You just have be really damn good overall. On this, it's obviously too early to comment about him. Having said that, I cannot think of a worse comparison than Hewitt. It's clear they are nothing alike as players.

He won his second match too. It's impressive for a 14 year old kid, despite his opponents.

Kozlov will be fine so long as he works hard. He's got everything needed to succeed at playing the smart tennis that he does.
