^^ Amazing.

@ Duong: Federer did shed a tear or two at match point, so happy he looked miserable in fact.

Agreed about Murray and his "Wilander year", but maybe not 2008...

I feel exactly the same way TBH. Gutted for Murray. He played really well, but no doubt that a combination of fatigue and the roof being closed gave a slightly bigger edge to Federer.

The whole match hinged on the game at 3-2* in the 3rd IMO. Federer didn't look like he'd drop serve once the roof had been closed whereas Murray seemed to be struggling to keep up with Federer. I think Murray's best chance at that point was to hope to get into a 3rd set TB, or hope that Federer shanked a few shots on his own serve to allow Murray to break. Once Fed had secured the break in the 3rd it was too much of an uphill task for Murray.

Hats off to Federer. All the excellent results he gained indoors and in the other Masters series have counted for something when some people when adamant that he was only about the slams these days. One record tied, one extended and one about to be broken in the next couple of weeks. Pretty epic stuff.

It will be interesting to see how Murray reacts to this. He can't afford to go into one of his slumps at this point, especially with a title to defend in Cincinnati and a US Open SF aswell. Next few months shall be extremely interesting indeed.

Still smiling about this victory. Respect to Murray though, he did himself credit and will win a slam soon I'm sure.

Only Del Potro can take him out before the semis, and he won't. Nadal is winning the AO, bet your house on it.
Somewhere out there, there is a homeless person who once took betting advice from GSMnadal

Just a small correction here, I am sure you meant "Wilander 1988". Unless Wilander really went to work on the senior tour that year, I must confess to not following the seniors very closely.

Murray played very well and held the pressure remarkably, I'm still convinced he will win multiple slams although I was of course sad for him during his speech,

I consider this match as I saw Scarecrows said in another thread, as one of Fed's most remarkable performances,

because he was outplayed for the service-return sequence (the TV showed 43 to 25 unreturned serves in favour of Murray a few games before the end, although Fed won a little bit more points on his first serve than Murray after hitting another shot), and also Fed didn't have as much power as he can,

but he showed how intelligent he could play, how well he knows and feels this game, and the way to build the points, and together with a good steady mental attitude, it won him the match.

Three other points :

- the stats show that after the break and roof was closed, it was not Fed's serve quality which increased but Murray's serve quality which decreased : from 72% first serve in second set (which happens seldom for him, wining the second set was the key of the match for Fed) to 49 and 45% in the third and fourth sets ... although Fed nearly won as many points on Murray's first serve as on his second serve in the third set with his poor second serve return in that set

- Fed was not as emotional as usual ... because as he said in his interview, he didn't prepare the end of the match before the match was finished, which was his habit in the past : that change has to be attributed to his US Open losses against Djokovic. Don't prepare mentally for the end before it's completely ended ... that's also the reason why Djokovic is not that emotional after his slams wins. Fed said he will need more time to fully realize than usual

- I was impressed by Murray's return quality in this match. I've thought that for long myself but I really think that the others should reconsider the comparison between the Murray's return and the Djokovic's return after this match : imo they are very near from each other, and the better one might not be Djokovic's.

I really hope Murray will not lose hope and rather see this tournament as half-full because his whole tournament was great, with one of the hugest draws of recent years, and I think he gained much more love from the Brits, and I hope that will be his main memory.

He's young and still has a lot of time ahead of him, and I still think he might have a "Wilander 2008" year one day, with several slams and a world number 1 despite a relative lack of power.
Murray has a great return sure, as we could see yesterday, especially in the first 2 sets. It's close to Djokovic's. Djokovic's is still beter though. Murray can put a lot of serves back in, difficult serves, like Roger's. But what is amazing about Djokovic's return is how he can consistently put the return very deep, which is why he can put pressure on the server is most of the service games.
