Hello.

Personally, I think that the first British tennis player (since Fred Perry 1936) who wins a Grand Slam tournament (preferably Wimbledon) should be a cool Englishman, instead of this angry guy with his angry mother. It should be someone who could deliver the line "The name is Bond, James Bond" without sounding like an idiot. (And yes, I know that Connery is Scottish and that Bond in Fleming's novels is half Scottish and half Swiss). But now I am courious: What do people in England think? I have heard about the phenomenon that Murray is perceived as British when he wins and is perceived as Scottish when he loses. I have nothing against Scotland, in fact my favourite snooker player of all time is Stephen Hendry, but I just don't like Andy Murray.

In Scotland they love him, in England most hate him.....not just because of his ugliness, but also his English hating ways.

it's only natural to have some degree of adversion towards the english in pretty much every nation. i'd be amazed to find ANY country with a positive vision of england.

I don't guess you have ever heard of the U.S.A.? Oh and to get back on topic I think the English want Andy to be English instead of Scottish.
But he does live in London and has an English g/f. But if he could ever win Wimbledon, I think they would be able to overlook the fact he is Scottish!

I never particularly liked Murray from the first time I saw him. He always seemed cold and disaffected. Djoko is a hothead, but at least he has the fire to compete and the will to win. Murray has none of that.

I thought this phenomenon is not Murray specific. Wasn't it the same for Mary Pierce? when she lost, she's American, when she won, she is French.

Yeah she did get a bit of that. I wonder if Sharapova gets that in Russia? I know the ESPN commentators try to claim her as American when she's on a roll.

I don't remember that (but it was always hard for me to consider MAry Pierce as French, either winning or losing, because of her strong American accent),

but I remember the jokes about Noah in the 80s : French when he won, from Cameroon when he lost

But it was more like jokes than serious

there's a lot about my people that piss me off. The women, the Sun newspaper, the miserable spoilsport brigade, the Tories, the 'toff' types with stupid posh accents like Louise Mensch, John Terry, the hype whenever England play a tournament instead of supporting them in the proper way, all sorts. The dislike of Murray for a joke about England's World Cup in 2006 is another thing that pisses me off.

Luckily where I live we consider ourselves proud to be from our particular reason first, English second.

Regarding the question, here's a small example.. I went to a birthday dinner this evening after the semi-final and it was a good mix, most of the people there who were hardened year-round tennis fans support other top players namely Fed and Rafa so were mostly pulling for Fed; a few were fervently supporting Murray because they'd been following the tournament and supported him because he's "one of us"; and a few were directly anti-Murray or generally pro Federer and so weren't supporting him in the final. The complaints in the latter group mainly revolved around his perceived lack of charisma. I'd guess the split between these three groups was about 15-55-40.
