Default Djokovic Should Tank Everything but Slams and Exhos If He Wants to Become GOAT

He can play indoor season but that's it. There is no benefit for him as far as pre-slam tournaments are concerned.

History proves my case:

He participated in Halle and Queens, losing to grass court specialists between 2007-2010. 0 grass titles.

DID NOT PLAY any grass warmup starting in 2011, BAM two Wimbledons.

Plays AO warmup in 07, gets routined by Federer. NO WARMUP 2008, STRAIGHT SETS OVER PEAK ROGER. 4 out his 5 AO titles came without any practice.

Never skipped clay or summer HC season- ZER0 RGs, and only one USO from closing his eyes on the lucky forehand.

It is intuitively obvious to the most casual observer that Djokovic is an underachiever who wastes all his energy outside the slams. If he skips the entire season apart from slams, he will also have more time to spend with his child who may be feeling slightly neglected at this point. Murray gets #1 and Nadal and Federer can vulture a few masters. Everyone wins.

I'm sure the ATP will allow this.

The ATP is a corrupt organization looking to w**re out its players for betting and ticket sales. But that's another thread.

You are stupid. In the entire history of tennis there are only a handful of players above Djokovic even to this point. He had to negotiate the most competitive era in tennis. There were no cakewalk years like Federer had.

Sure he might have converted a few more slam finals. But by the end of 2018 he will be top 5 ALLTIME at worst. And have broken some important records.

There's no need for names. I think we can all agree that Fed is a vulture of highest order. But this thread is not about Federer, it's not about settling for top 5 all time. It's about passing Laver, Nadal, and Sampras, and becoming the undisputed GOAT.

That may or may not come. It's a big ask for three players in one era to all get to 14 slams or more. Even though one of them had it a lot easier to get their total. Novak will go down as one of the greatest and HARDCOURT goat.

I was gonna make a thread similar to this (but rather SUGGESTING he do these things, I was just going to call to attention the fact that he seems to do so much better when he's not trying to "prove" himself in smaller events and Masters).

He has rarely been peaking in slams, and instead saves his best and most urgent form of tennis for the Masters.

You may be onto something here. It does indeed seem that Djokovic isn't the type of player who needs a lot of prep tournaments in order to get into form. On the other hand being so consistent and going so deep into practically every tournament he plays probably does wear him out both physically and mentally for the slams. Unfortunately it's a bit late at this point to make a significant change though. This strategy is something that he would have had to implement a lot earlier on in his career.

As for this GOAT battle, if Djokovic had at least picked up an additional 2-3 slams during the 2012-2014 period (and perhaps RG this year), then he would be in a real position to fight for GOAT status. As it stands though, I think he will end with around 11-12 slams, at best tying Nadal with 14. Even as a huge Novak fan, I don't see any possible way of him getting more than 14 slams.

I wish it were otherwise but Djokovic really doesn't have any chance of becoming GOAT anymore. For whatever reason, whether it's bad planning, bad luck, or just lack of mental strength, he came up short one too many times during some key matches over the last 3 years. Namely, IMO, the USO 2012 final, RG 2013 SF, and USO 2014 SF (although a case could be made for other matches too).

But in the end you only get what you earn. Djokovic doesn't have to be GOAT. I'd be happy even if he were to end his career at this very moment, and I'll be thrilled if his slam count ends in the double digits.

I knew right off the bat that Novak made a big mistake playing both IW and Miami. He has plenty of points in the race, is comfortably #1, IW and Miami lead to nowhere and he's won them 4-5 times anyway. Good call to skip Madrid so that offset some of his fatigue but he should've skipped both Miami and Madrid, maybe even MC and just play Rome and RG. Hope he just plays Rome and RG next year and finally gets that career slam. Mugrinka played the party spoiler and denied us of history, that was disgusting and cruel. It's a shame for tennis that Novak still hasn't won RG when he's been comfortably the best claycourter in 2011,arguably 2013,2015 and maybe 2014. Sad.

Very respectable position - if only the Nadull turds had the same stance. Your favourites don't have to be the GOAT in order to enjoy their presence in ATP.

As for the topic at hand, Novak needs to do better in big matches. Simple stuff - no need for the clownish hate pics of Fed shedding a tear.

Lol Federer was past his prime when he was defeated by Djokovic and this was also in the shitty plexicushion surface. No way Novak stook a chance at Rebound Ace. And the butthurt fanboys gotta stop whining about 'easy years' cos no true tennis fan would say something as idiotic as that. Why didn't you guys try and win a slam in that era if it was so easy? Also, Novak doesn't even have the best record on hardcourt (which includes the trash that is plexicushion). Federer does, has most HC majors, best streak on HC and most HC titles. And he didn't have to win it from a Andy Murray who chokes every time the match goes into a deciding set.

Substitute Roger with Djokovic, Nadull, or Murray and they probably wouldn't win as many slams as Roger did during 2004-2007 combined. I think many of the Fed detracting turds would be absolutely aghast at how terribly their favourites would have done in Roger's era - and that's why the "weak era" is an intellectually dishonest, cowardly, and convenient standpoint to take.
