So it's still compulsory for top 30 players to play four 500s but they don't have to count any (like Tipsarevic)?

Yes and you will still get penalty 0 if you don't play enough

if you play less than 4 ATP500 tournaments (or Monte-Carlo) in the calendar year, you get a zero-pointer, which means that you have to count one less optional result.

Presumably, a player who is allowed to play all grand slams and MS1000 tournaments, can potentially count 6 optional results, including ATP500, ATP250, challenger (and futures ) tournaments.

It means that in such a case, he can count only 5 of them.

For instance that's Nadal and Federer's case at the moment ... and that will probably be their case in the end of the year as well, as like last year, I don't think Federer will play Tokyo or Beijing, and I don't think Nadal will play Valencia. Which means both of them will only have played 3 ATP500 (or Monte-Carlo) tournaments in the calendar year.

How is this applied ? See Monfils, he has not played any ATP500 tournament (or Monte-Carlo) yet this year. And after Hamburg, there will be only 3 dates left to play ATP500 tournaments.

Then Monfils will have to count a zero-pointer for Hamburg ... which means that he will count one less optional result.

For Federer, after Tokyo and Beijing, he will have played only 2 ATP500 tournaments this year and there will be only one date left to play ATP500 tournaments ... then he will count one zero-pointer for Tokyo or Beijing ... which means that he will be able to count only 5 optional results.

Which is the exact same situation for him as last year, which means that he will just keep his zeropointer from Tokyo and still be able to count only 5 optional results and not 6.

Same case for Nadal probably but only in Valencia.

What's new comparing to last year however is that among your 6 optional results, you don't have to count necessarily 4 ATP500 results including zeropointers (well some players were allowed to count only 3 of them in a complicated case )
... which will probably be the case of players like Tipsarevic : he will have played 4 ATP500 tournaments in the calendar year but he will have had better results in ATP250 tournaments then he will count less than 4 ATP500 results in his rankings.

Well I hope it's more understandable now

Anyway the new situation is still much easier than last year

Monte Carlo counts as one of the optional tournaments? Thanks for the help.. I'm what you'd call a novice diehard fan. I used to just watch some grand slam matches and thats it lol.

yes Monte-Carlo is still a MS1000 tournament (gives 1000 points to the winner) but has been optional since 2009, and he also is included in the requirement for the top-30 players to play at least 4 ATP500 tournaments in the calendar year, that's why I always write "ATP500 tournaments (or Monte-Carlo)"

When I thought I've understood rankings I got confused again , Can anyone explain me why Cilic is counting in his ranking Hamburg points (90) and not the 150 points he earned in Munich?

Maybe because it's not countable and Hamburg is a required 500 since their isn't many left he'll play? I really don't know.

It seems that the rules allowing players to replace a low scoring 500 with a higher scoring 250 only take affect in 2012 after a player drops a 500 tournament. Since Cilic did not play any 500 tournament in 2011 before Hamburg, he does not enjoy this change in the rules yet.

Why are people saying Monaco is going into the top 10? The live ranking website I use says he'll be 11th. And I'm pretty sure that's correct.

Nope , it is wrong. Isner isn't gaining any points this week because he can't replace his Monte Carlo penalty "0"(he withdrew late from a commitment tournament) by the points (90) he got this week in Atlanta.

so it is #10 Monaco 2695, #11 Isner 2620, #12 Almagro 2545
