So basically before the final of tomorrow, Djokovic is over 2000 points ahead of Federer and the Swiss can only clinchs 3000 till the end of the season. So he need to win almost all his matchs with Djokovic not being in final in Paris and the Masters, and lost against Andy tomorrow...

Seems like it will be easier for Nole gain points to get to #1 than Roger defending all his points. :-(

Not 2000 points before the final, no. If he wins it, he's more than 2000 ahead. Not if he loses. Rather moot point, though, at this stage Djokovic has all but secured YE#1 for the second time in a row. First to do so since Federer 2007 (or Wozniacki 2011 if you count WTA). My congratulations to him, well deserved.

Crap... the ITF site is acting up and it caused the automation to fail on my work computer. Gonna have to continue manually until Monday. Gonna have to insert a failsafe mechanism that closes the sheet after an error, permitting the next task to load the sheet again, thus allowing the automation to continue in an error-safe sheet.

Yes he probably will, that is hardly bold prediction. So we won't mark your words.

I think Rogie is only 195 points ahead of Djokovic now, meaning that if Rogie doesn't win Basel outright, on Monday 10/29 they will swap rankings. Rogie even just making the final means a loss of 200 points (300 points for the event and not 500) and Djokovic would be in first by a whopping 5 points. Rogie might not win the Basel final because Murray will likely be in it (less worried about a possible rusty Del Potro or potential Gasquet in the SF).

It says so in the first post. Is it not there anymore?

Well it would have been extremely difficult for Fed to make year end No. 1 - I think we all knew that. As he said, if that were the main focus, he would have played Tokyo or Beijing. The main objective in playing Shanghai was achieved - getting to the 300-week milestone

No, they won't. Basel playes one week earlier this year than last year. So for one week we'll have two Basel's counting. As of now, Federer is pretty much guaranteed his 302th week (unless Djokovic takes a WC to Basel/Valencia) but it is a mathematical certainty that Djokovic will pass him the week after that, when Fed drops 3000 points all at once.

Roger now has 9255 year to date points. He has 2910 up for grabs, so the maximum he can have at the end of the year is 12165. Novak has 11410 YTD points. So to secure Y-E #1 Novak needs 755 points. So he needs SF in Paris and 2 wins in WTF to secure it. It does seam hard for Roger to get it, but not impossible, although it doesn't depend solely on him. What I find a much bigger problem for Roger is that, in order to get the Y-E #1 even if Novak does go out early in Paris and has lets say 1 win in WTF, he would need to play on a level on which he played in only 2 tournaments this year - Wimbledon and Cincy (maybe Dubai, I didn't watch that tournament, so I can't talk about it).

So you're saying Djokovic will likely swap rankings with Rogie on Monday 11/05 after Paris is done?

Yes, he is assured of the #1 after Paris. No doubt whatsoever. And as for switching before, that would require him to play the week before. That will require a WC, he is not entered anywhere. And why should he? Acceptable play in Paris and London will be plenty to secure YE#1 for him.

Next week the ultimate test: I'll be leaving this Friday and return on Monday the 29th. If the automation doesn't fail, I will be happy and surprised at the same time.

Slasher, are you sure Davydenko is right? You have him at 975 both start and finish of the week, but surely he is defending 90 points and can only replace with 35?
