This appeared in The Times Online.co. UK. They were talking about Henman and then had this: " For the second week in a row, they were calling this a championship designed for Henman to win. He had been left as the top seed in Madrid and when Roger Federer — the world No 1 who has been practising behind closed doors with Tony Roche, the Australian who guided Ivan Lendl and Pat Rafter to Wimbledon finals — pulled out of Basle with a thigh injury, all seemed set fair. "

That's interesting, when all were speculating Darren is who Rogi had his eyes on. I read somewhere Roche achieved much more as a double player than single? But he won in French Open?

Rogi seems to take a liking on the Aussie coaches.

This is probably not confirmed, but anybody can comment what's Tony Roche's style like? Who's a better coach? Tony or Darren?

Tony Roche is a very good coach and a very affable guy. As for his coaching he is understated in style, but very meticulous as for past players.

Well I am not sure about anyone here but Ivan Lendl and Pat Rafter aren't exactly bad former pupils.

Good to hear. I don't r'ber where I heard this before, but I remembered some commentators saying Rogi plays and acts more of the styles of older generation of Aussie players than the current Aussie players.

So Rafter was the last one he coached?

Rafter was the last one, but he was a co-captain of the Davis Cup team with Newcombe.

Federer woos Roche
By LEO SCHLINK
31oct04

TONY Roche has been linked again to the most coveted job in tennis – coaching world No. 1 Roger Federer.

Roche, the modest Sydneysider who guided Pat Rafter and Ivan Lendl to the peaks of the game, was first targeted by the Federer camp during the Australian summer season.
But the former Davis Cup great and Grand Slam singles champion was unable to give the Swiss stylist a commitment to return full-time to the circuit.

Federer, however, has persuaded Roche to be involved in a series of private practice sessions recently and there are increasingly strong suggestions from Switzerland Federer might have snared the former Australian Davis Cup coach.

Federer, 23, has been playing without a coach since he split from Swede Pete Lundgren – now working with Russian Marat Safin – after winning the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston last year.

His form has not suffered, with the right-hander compiling a 69-6 record with 10 singles titles this season, crowned by triumphs at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open.

Federer is believed to have sounded out Roche in January as he sought a return to the Australian coaching system. He was originally groomed by South Australian Peter Carter, who was killed in a road accident in South Africa two years ago.

According to his lawyer, Roger has trained with Tony in Dubai, and may train again with him, but he says that Tony is not a candidate for the coach position because he does not want travel on tour.

Does anyone else find it ironic that the best player in the world can't find a coach because the handful of eligible candidates are either already working with other top players or are older and don't want to travel?

I think even if Roach were to join Federer for the slams it would be benefitial, don't think he travelled full time with Rafter either.

The reason Roger likes the old style Australian players is that they all believe in a all court game and would definetly help Roger with volley tactics/strategies.

Cahill is also a coach like that and even the baseline bound Agassi has began to volley a tiny bit more since working with Darren, still think Cahill is the better long term solution then Roach but lets face it, doesn't seem like Agassi is letting him go anytime soon.

According to the same lawyer, Roger will work part time with Roche. In that article, they said too that Roger and Roche met in Dubai.

Dana thanks! So that's confirmed now? Rogi will work with Roche, part time?
