Default At what ranking will the top 3 retire?

Interesting Nadal interview in the Daily Mail today (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/mosl...Slam-jinx.html) in which he says:

Quote:
How will that ironclad mentality serve Nadal, though, when he is no longer at, or close to, the summit of the world rankings? Can he see himself playing when he is 12th in the world, 15th, 18th?

‘Why not?’ he asks. ‘If I feel competitive, if I’m still competing for things that motivate me, then I will be happy. If there is a chance to get from 15th to 10th, then I will be happy, I’m sure.’
Do you think we'll see Nadal, Fed, Novak etc. out there still battling when they start to move down the rankings? I'm not sure -- I think Fed will retire inside the top 5. His motivation is slams and the question is when he thinks that ship has sailed - overall he could stay top 5 for a while and if he was doing that poorly that he couldn't stay there then I don't think he'd be competitive at slams either and he'd call it a day.

With Nadal I don't know - he could fall a bit in the rankings i.e. 10-15 but still be competing for RG at least and clay Masters so maybe he won't quit straight away though I don't know if I see him being content at that ranking. Novak I think would be most comfortable falling and coming back up as he's not been in the top dog position as much in his career and often had Fedal in front so perhaps mentally not as much of a barrier for him.

Other interesting points in the interview - Nadal would keep Wimbledon 08 if he could only keep one slam as 07 was his worst ever defeat and he cried for half an hour in the locker room afterwards - got over Wimbledon last year in a day and hasn't thought about it since; thinks Murray is best ever not to win a slam and he needs to have the right mentality:

Quote:
"But if he keeps putting himself in the position to win, I believe he will do it. I say to myself sometimes, after losing against Novak six times, seven times, that I can lose eight, nine, ten, 12, but one day I will beat him. Murray needs the same mentality.’"

Think they're too high for all. Federer 4/5; Djokovic 14; Nadal 11. But maybe I'm being too optimistic - look how quickly Roddick and Hewitt fell. Sampras too fell from a great height.... For Novak, Rafa etc. going out in a few first rounds usually means losing tons of points - then again they pick up points consistently throughout the year so would take quite a few months for them to fall out of top 10 or top 15.

I like these parts

Quote:
Federer, who turns 31 in August and trails Nadal 8-2 in Grand Slam head-to-heads, is surely now past his formidable best. Djokovic, however, is a year younger than Nadal and might conceivably go on getting better.
But will Nadal? Can Nadal? He doesn’t have Federer’s elegance on a tennis court, nor Djokovic’s fluidity of movement, but nobody combines power and athleticism quite like he does. It is hard to imagine there might be room for improvement.
‘But I have to believe it,’ he counters. ‘Even if I have already peaked, I have to believe I can improve. I wake up every morning, and go to practice, with the illusion that I’m going to get better that day.

'My serve can get better, for sure. It’s not just about serving bombs, but positioning, variation in speed, in spin. Federer is fantastic at that.

'And I can improve my positioning on court. I should get more often to the net, to close points.’
Quote:
'Tennis has given me a lot, so many fantastic experiences. It is not a bad place to be. So, if I have kids, I would let them do what they want. If they wanted to play tennis, I would support that,'

There is zero incentive to retire while you're still in main draws.

They'll probably be Top 20/30 by the time they retire. Unless it is influenced by injury.

I think all of them retire at same year lol..There will be a time some players 5 yrs younger on peak will beat Djoker/Nadal in slams. Nadal retire unranked is reasonable prediction, due to major injury. I doubt Nadal's career pass 2016.

I'm no Fakervic fan but he needs to save tennis, sadly tree trunk legs will be fresh. Interesting he's never questioned...

Also, ‘I think I’m a great loser,’ he states. ‘When I play badly, like in the Wimbledon final last year, that’s disappointing.'
