You guys are looking at this the wrong way. In terms of important for your tennis legacy, Slams are the most important.

But for a sportsman, winning the Olympics games means the most. Just remember how Novak was left in tears after losing that semi to Rafa in 2008. There's nothing bigger than the Olympics in sports, it's the greatest sporting event.

Even if the tennis tournament doesn't have that much tradition, an Olympic medal is still an Olympic medal.

In 4 years time you've got 16 chances to grab a slam, only one to grab an olympic gold medal, the greatest sports event in the world.

Strange it feels special

Think Murray will be relieved he can't grab another runner up plate, a silver medal would be the biggest trophy of his career.

You are too kind.
Murray > Olympic Games (2008), 1R
Bronze would be like a career slam for him

Might be his personal opinion but in the future when people will be looking back at the great players, the olympics will not be rated as high as Slams.

Well, Nole said his main goals this year are RG and Olympics, so as someone said Wimbledon will be just a warm-up tournament

This. People need to accept that nothing in sports is bigger than an Olympic gold medal. Being especially patriotic, no wonder Novak is so eager to get it.

This is not about tennis greatness, it's about getting the biggest prize in the biggest sporting event in the world.

These discussions about what is more important for a player's tennis legacy are pointless and have nothing to do with what Nadal said.

that's actually pretty unlikely no offense. TENNIS has not been in the olympics for very long, but decades from now it will have been a part of the olympics for some time and grow in value with each increment of 4 years. the fact is that the significance of the Olympics even in tennis will grow and grow and probably surpass a slam eventually.

what you have to face are the #'s and pride people have for their countries. there is a reason people fight so hard at all of the other olympic sports in the world: because it is such an honor to be the best at something in the world and be able to hold that honor for your country. the prestige will become greater than having a slam in tennis definitely, if it is not already close. also as another poster pointed out, you have less chances to get one. one tournament in 4 years versus 16 chances in 4 years? no offense but 1>16 as far as odds and importance.

Nadal is correct, and esspecially when considering someone like him who already has 10 slams, the Olympics just grows in importance. he has only won it once before and it is very rare that chances come up to win it.

some of you are acting very short sided if you really believe that the tennis Olympics is not important and will not grow exponentially in prestige

earth to Murray / Sapeod, Olympics/Slam >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Masters 1000 tournaments that Murray occasionally can win. lol, you have no room to criticize, what did Murray make the 1st round in 2008 Olympics? obviously it doesn't mean much to the two of you when you can't win matches in the tournament

Actually that's true. It may not be for us the fans but it is for the players.

Nole was recently asked by a fan on video which were the happiest and most tragic moments in his career. He said the happiest was winning Wimbledon last year and the worst losing to Nadal in 2008 at the Olimpic Games. He's made it clear that his two goals this year are winning RG and the gold medal.

For Rafa and Novak, winning an Olympic Gold for their Country would be a great thrill. Remember how thrilled Roger was when he and Stan won the doubles Gold? It was a shame that tennis was out of the Olympics for so long.

The fact that it is so rarely is precisely why it won't be as important because it's all about timing and luck to some extent. If we'd had the olympics in 2007 or 2009, Federer likely would've won whereas in 2010 Nadal would've won and 2011 Djokovic. It's so much based on form and luck...

Additionally, it's best of three until the final, with a smaller draw than in GSs and some of the best players in the world are not allowed to play because of the requirements
