Ouch....

From Wiki :
"Alpinism (alpinismo) is followed, because Italian alpinists wrote several pages of history in this sport. Italians Achille Compagnoni and Lino Lacedelli conquered first the summit of K2 (8611 m) in 1954, in the expedition led by the geologist Ardito Desio. Reinhold Messner was the first man in the world to reach the 14 summits, over 8,000 meters, and the first one to climb Mount Everest alone and without oxygen. Cesare Maestri conquered the Cerro Torre in Patagonia in 1959. Walter Bonatti is considered one of the best alpinists in Europe in the 1950's, realizing some ascents considered impossible by the competitors.'

There is also skiing with all those famous guys Gustavo Thoeni, Piero Gros, Alberto Tomba... and the guy on my avatar is not bad neither (Christof Innerhofer), all of them pretty independent and mentally tough, I guess...

Omar Camporese, Renzo Furlan and Andrea Gaudenzi were all top-20 players, but that's about it, I suppose.

Gaudenzi was a tough clay court competitor.

One or two RG champions had to go through him, I know Guga definitely did.

Here in Italy people (myself included) care a lot about soccer. Everything is about it.

I am on this forum to talk about tennis mainly because nobody (or very few people) cares about it here.

It's hard to speak about Italy as a whole, since it's a country that has never been unified and there are tons of differences of any kind..

For instance, all the sportsmen cited by Tchovs are from the nort-eastern part of Italy

If I should speak about individual sportsmen of my part of the country, we still have, say, Federica Pellegrini, Carolina Kostner, Matteo Manassero (which was born in 1993 and is the youngest golfer to win an European event), Manuela di Centa.. and many others, only from my north-eastern native land..

For what concerns tennis though there have been many good players here, generated from the so-called "Italian economic miracle" and the consequent blossoming of shitloads of (red clay) tennis courts, so that every little town has some fucking (unused for decades) courts. Probably apart from Pietrangeli, Barazzutti and Panatta you have saw or heard of Canč, Gaudenzi, Camporese, Furlan..

here are some best rankings: http://www.livetennis.it/post/101623...o-in-attivita/

It's been 20 or 30 years though that soccer overthrown everything again so since 1980 generally speaking everyone here in their young ages plays only soccer

mafia has always had links with the davis cup too here

While Nadal has been forced to pick his own ass from an early age? Uhmm, may be something in that.

Wonder where they get all their track and field medals from? Or cyclists? Or skiers? Or are those sports not independent enough for you?
