Really great? There have not been that many really great in the world. Eh, depends on one's definition...
Probably the best Italian male player in the Open Era was Adriano Panatta.
He is the only man to ever defeat the great Clay/Grass King Bjorn Borg at Roland Garros and he did it twice to prove it was no fluke, and went on to win Roland Garros in 1976. He also helped Italy win their only Davis Cup title in history in the same year.
His highest ranking was #4 in 1976 and all in all he won 9 titles, 1 major, a finalist in 16 others.
He was at least very good.

Not really true, ex-Yugoslavia had pretty long tennis history. Besides, after Nole and Tipsy retire, Serbia most likely won't have another top 100 player, let alone top 10.

Franjo Puncec, Nikola Pilic, Zeljko Franulovic, Boba Zivojinovic, Goran Ivanisevic and Goran Prpic; just too mention a few; now you have Novak, Tipsa, Cilic, Troicki, Karlovic, Dodig; Ljubo and and Ancic retired....
So of course there is a huge tradition in former Yugoslavia when it comes to tennis

Pietrangeli and Panatta, but yeh it is a bit strange
Bertolucci had very good, but not really great results also.

Nicola Pietrangeli appeared in four men's singles finals at Roland Garros, winning the title in 1959 and 1960. He reached a career high singles ranking of World No. 3.
After retiring as a player, Pietrangeli became Italy's Davis Cup team captain and guided them to winning their first-ever Davis Cup in 1976.
Pietrangeli was inducted in the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1986.
