I'm no Fakervic fan but he needs to save tennis, sadly tree trunk legs will be fresh. Interesting he's never questioned...

Well, anything's possible and it certainly is a great attitude to have, but the real question is: does Murray TRULY believes it, or is he just saying what he's is supposed/expected to say as a top 5 player in the world? It certainly won't be easy, especially because Murray has also a lot of points to defend between now and Wimbledon (not as much as Nole and Rafa of course, but still, if he loses focus, he can drop in the rankings also). My honest opinion is that it is a BIG ask. He can reach no.3, or even possibly no.2, but I doubt that he'll be able to take no.1 spot from Nole this year...but stranger things have happened in tennis, so you never know. Who would have thought that Nole would have had the year that he had in 2011? I doubt that even his biggest fans could have predicted the success he had in 2011/2012.

To do that he should have outperformed Nadal and Federer on his best surface, i.e. slow hard courts - he's sure as hell not going to outperform Nadal on clay (and probably not on grass). Yet he came out of Aus Open/IW/Miami will fewer points than Rafa and Roger.

He needs to focus on his strengths and play the right calendar to maximise points. Nadal for example focuses most on the IW-US Open swing - particularly clay courts - as he knows he needs to peak then. Fed knows that indoor is now his domain so he wisely skipped Shanghai etc. to gear up for his indoor assault.

Murray will have to do spectacularly post Wimbledon i.e. US hardcourts, Asia and indoor to overtake both Nadal and Federer for the year end no.2

Then again, all it takes is him winning Wimbledon and the US Open, whilst Nadal wins RG i.e. he will have 2 slams to Rafa and Novak's 1 and suddenly even the no.1 could be in sight with some US hardcourt masters added on.. Think the race this year will be tight and Murray's attitude is the right one - if you don't believe in yourself, why should anyone else....

I think Andy has best chances to win a slam at US open..but if Nole wins RG and Wimby he's keeping No1 for shure..

That won't be enough, he'll have to start owning Fed, Nole AND Rafa since to win a slam he'll most likely have to face 2/3. If Murray wants to be number 1 he'll have to be better than everyone in the world, which means owning Fed, Nole and Rafa, and there lies the problem. It's not just one great player that stands between him and no.1/slam titles but three great players. Chances of all three of them being out of form in slams are close to zero, so Murray will REALLY have to earn his slam/no.1 spot.

The race currently:

Novak Djokovic SRB 3540
Roger Federer SUI 2865
Rafael Nadal ESP 2160
Andy Murray GBR 1880

He's not really that far behind but he needs to perform in a way that he's never done before to finish #1 and I do not see it happening.

To end the year as no.1, Murray will have to do what Nole did in 2011, which is pretty much win everything. What Nole did last year does not happen every year, that's for sure.

That's not necessarily true - if Andy wins 2 slams and the Masters are more split this year (i.e. not 5 for one player!) then he won't have to win everything to be no.1 - he just needs to win a little bit more than the others. Hypothetically, if he wins Wimbledon & US Open (and Nadal wins RG), Fed wins Olympics, he wins the Masters Cup, he and Novak split the summer hard court masters, Nadal and Novak split the clay masters etc. - then he could be no.1 without winning everything...

When you look at the points race it's clear that there's room for things to change up - who knows what form the top 4 will be in by the time the Rogers Cup rolls around - after the gruelling clay, grass and Olympics stretch... Still, can't see it happening - Novak looks too strong and Nadal isn't fading totally - but it's not impossible.

Sure, he COULD, but that's a lot of ifs...if he REALLY wants to guarantee his no.1 spot he'll have to do what Nole did, more or less.

Muzza's most certainly not without a chance, the way things are in the rankings right now.
That said, he'll have to perform way better than he's being doing so far this year. But who knows...?

Anything can happen.
And yes, don't count out Mr. Pics Ferrer either. Or whomever else manages to make a good run in the upcoming couple of months.
John Isner, anyone?

Well yeah sure - but I think the path I outlined is more likely than him going on a Novak-like streak for the next 4 months. Not hard to imagine Nadal winning RG and Federer winning the Olympics. Similarly Murray has the game to win Wimbledon and the US Open. In that scenario the no.1 ranking comes down to the Masters & Masters Cup - Murray will be competitive in all the non-clay ones....

What would be amazing would be if the year end ranking was decided at the Masters Cup.

I'm afraid that he IS that far behind. Zsess is right, Murray would need to win pretty much everything in order to reach #1, and I just don't see it happening (Djokovic, Rafa and Rog are still awaiting around the corner). He needs to win that first slam and gain some confidence. If it happens, I doubt it is going to be at RG or W. USO, maybe but it's too complicated. I do agree that Murray should stay positive and this is a great attitude.
