Well Federer has to retire at some point. He is 31 for christ sake. How many top players are age 30 and over?

Murray will def. get No. 3 for sure someday.

Murray got No.3 last year and promptly lost it. I'd also bet on Fed winning more slams from 2012 till retirement than Murray. That'll probably turn out to be 1 as opposed to 0.

Sadly Andy is done as far as being number 1 someday. He may be number 2 or 3 at some point but that would be it.

Could everyone stop taking the piss ? Murray has to believe he can reach the summit otherwise playing on is pointless. It's not a matter of this being realistic or not. It's the motivation factor...also just how realistic is Murray's goal ?

1. Federer is not that far ahead and is retiring soon.
2. Nole is still the undisputed number one but signs are there that the 2011 imperious form is over.
3. Nadal is prone to injury and should he miss a GS Murray will take full advantage. Don't see any inexplicable losses a la 2009 Wimbledon.

So as you can see Murray's optimism is not way over the top. It's doable people.

Now having said all of that I am not happy with Murray this year. He has to step it up and go on the attack from the get go

Sadly? A weaponless pusher not being #1 is great news for the sport.

Well, for someone who is supposed to be motivated and believing, he went out somewhat tamely in almost every tournament after AO

It's been a strange year for Murray. This was supposed to be his year, and despite his great start (2 finals and taking Djokovic to 5 at the AO), a Slam looks further away than ever.

With that said, I do wonder whether 2013 will be the year. There's some curious parallels between him and the Djoker. In 2009/2011, they were both quite consistent, but had some odd losses, and picked it up towards the end of the year, before burning out somewhat. In 2010/2012, it was thought they'd finally breakthrough, but they start off poorly and have a disappointing year, but look better in Slams. (obviously this isn't confirmed yet).

Could he prove that he is the true member of the Big 4 after all?

True but Djoker always was a superior player in every sense
