JP Smith not playing a Futures this week?
How'd he go?

Playing in Canada F6 $15k Futures, JP is into the final with a 61 62 win over England's Ed Corrie.

Seeded No. 2, Jipper plays No.7 seed Ante Pavic (ATP 371)from Croatia in final, who beat the No.1 seed Filip Canadian Peliwo along the way.

JP won the title in Winnipeg.

Matt Reid (beat Rubin Statham 64,36,61) and Matt Ebden (beat Hiroki Kondo 63, 60) advanced to QF's in Bangkok Challenger.
Ben Mitchell bowed out to Suk-Young Jeong 2nd round, going down surprisingly 26, 16.

Mat will play doubles partner and No.3 seed Jimmy Wang (ATP 139) and Ebden (no.2 seed) plays another Hiroki, Moriya (the No. 5 seed - ATP 181).

Go the Aussies

Default Re: Aussies in Challengers and Futures

QFinal results at Sydney Futures #1 (at Homebush)

(3) Adam Feeney beats Uchiyama in a tight two-setter, 75, 76(4), after giving up a break lead in each set;
(4) Alex Bolt drops first set 67(6), then sneaks through second set 76(3), before getting on with the job and finishing off Van Peperzeel 61 in the 3rd set
(2) Upset of the day for Jordan Thompson with a no non-sense 63, 63 win over No.2 seed Rubin Statham. Too hot for the Kiwi after a gruelling match yesterday.
(1) Greg Jones plays his "get-out-of-jail" card against Blake Mott, dropping the first set 46, rallying to win the second set 63, then going behind 1-4 with a single break, recovering to 4-4, then holding serve at 4-5 and 5-6 to get to the tie-break, then going an early mini-break down but gets it back to change ends at 3-3, trailed on serve at 4-5 but hung tough to get to 6-5 and converts the first mp to win the tb 7-5, the set 76, and a hard fought, closely contested match 46 63 76(5).
Not sure how the players coped with the heat. Mott had an injury time out after Jones broke him in the 2nd set and led 3-0, but not sure what that was for.
Semis tomorrow in cooler weather...

Default Re: Aussies in Challengers and Futures

In the semis in Sydney, Jones improved his QF performance to beat Feeney, and Thompson frustrated the hell out of Bolt to get the win, to get to the final at Homebush, Sydney.

In the Final, on a perfect day for tennis, Thompson got the upper hand in the first set over a misfiring Jones, taking the set 6-3. He thenn took the advantage in the second set by breaking Jones for the 3rd time and then holding serve to consolide the break. At a set and 2-4 down things looked grim for Jones. But he rallied, broke back and levelled at 4-4, going on to win the 2nd set 7-5.
Jones broke Jordan in the opening game of the 3rd set, then saved 3 bp's to hold, going on to win the set 6-1 over a despondent Jordan and with it the title and a valuable 27 points.

Not to many recognisable names in the qualifying draw for Taralgon. The draw is also 16 not 32 so only two wins needed to make the main draw. A good chance for a few players to pick up three easy points. There must be a fair few withdrawals,

Some upsets in the Burnie Challenger:

JP Smith loses to Chris O'Connell 26 63 26
Duckworth goes down to Yuichi Ito in three sets 46 63 36 (is his elbow still ailing?)
Jones (still suffering from shoulder problems it appears from the livestream of the match) loses in 3rd set tie-break to Matt Barton, 64 36 67(4), after having match point on Matt's serve in the 3rd set.
Alex Bolt defeats No.7 seed Dutchman Boy Westerhof, after saving match points, 76(4) 67(4) 75
Ben Mitchell beats the higher ranked Ito, Tatsuma, coming from a set down to win 46 64 62

With the No.1 seed not pitching (Klahn won Maui and could not get to Burnie on time) there are only two seeds left, Matt Reid (5) in the bottom half and Hiroki Moriya (4) in the top half.
Watch out though for wild card Jarmere Jenkins (why did he get a wc ahead of our Aussies ?), who plays Barton next

I'm curious about this one as well. Seems strange that they gave a wildcard to a 23 year old American ranked 323rd in the world who would have got in directly had he entered.

O'Connell has been the big surprise this week, I remember he was ranked about a year ago but didn't have any big results... Now suddenly he'll has 18 points and a top 900 ranking. Not bad!

Burnie Challenger

Matt Reid screams into the finals, with a comprehensive 62 61 win over Yuichi Ito (ATP 480). (the result I expected from Duckworth).
He might just sneak into the top 200 with this result. Of course winning the final will do the trick.

Good luck in the final for Matt. He played really well. I was impressed by his movement and work at the net. Serve wobbled abit at times but he had the Japanese guy very bemused and bewildered. Thank god one of our men is still in the event.
