Default Indian Wells R1: Llodra def. Gulbis 6-3 5-7 7-6(3)

Expected Mika would win the close match between these two. Both guys had their chances. Mika broke to 15 for a 3-1 lead in the first set but Gulbis had openings throughout most of the match on return, until the last half of the third set where Mika was controlling his service games. Gulbis was mostly dominant on serve after being broken from the middle of the first set through the second set. Gulbis had break point at 3-*2 in the second set and *15-30 at 4-*3 and didn't break. Mika had *15-30 at 5 all to serve for the match in the second and was broken immediately to love the next game to love to lose the set.

Gulbis got broken to open the third set in a game which he double faulted twice but immediately rebroke to 15 to get it back on serve. Both guys held some close service games through the third set and Gulbis saved *15-30 at 5 all.

In the tiebreak, Mika took a 4-*0 and 6-*1 lead to take complete control of the breaker. Ultimately, Mika saved a lot of close games on serve and the difference in mental strength between the two is what got him through this battle. Good win in the end for Mika.

Allez Mika
I was worried after he lost two service games in a row, but I should've counted on Gulbis not having a mentality to win these kind of matches.

Llodra has improved his weak record in the deciding 3rd set tie-breaks, 5-1 in the last 10 months.

Nice TB in that 3rd set Gulbis. Nice serving in general btw.
Congrats, Mika!

I knew Mika would win when he was winning his service games very easily the last half of the third set. Seemed like he started getting better rhythm on serve. Gulbis was having to do more to hold as the third set went on so I expected that to catch up to him.

Plus, it's Gulbis. He's mentally weak. Mika wins these matches most of the time against guys like this.

Clutch Llodra vs. Mug Gulbis in a 3rd set tiebreak?

There was always only going to be one winner.

Apparently Llodra had some cavemen behavior going on in this match:

tweet from reporter on sight:

ML smacked ball out of court, threw racquet, called Gulbis supporter in crowd a "f--king Chinese."Confirmed later with brother of woman.

Sat very first row - dead centre behind the court for Llodra - Gulbis - heard a lot. Deplorable behaviour by Llodra - read next tweet
