Default USO 2014, last realistic chance for Federer to win another GS?

He had the best draw he could have asked (No Nadal, both Murray and Djokovic in the other half, etc.) and it opened up even more with Dimitrov and Berdych (on paper the two most dangerous players on his half) losing early and then Djokovic losing in the SF opening the way for a potential final. Of course, being the USO, he also had the crowd's support and hype.

But, in spite of all the hype, signs of trouble came early in the QF when he was on the brink of defeat against Monfils. Then the inevitable happened and he got straight setted by Cilic, a player against who he had a 5-0 record.

Needless to say, a draw like the one he had in USO 2014 is highly unlikely to repeat again. At the age he is, it's also highly unlikely for Federer to get a better chance to add another GS.

tbh, I'd say we're gonna retroactively look at 2014 Wimbledon as the last viable chance for Fed to snag 18

I think he's pretty much done given that he couldn't convert this opportunity. The draws could only get harder.

Umm NOONE thought Cilic would straight set Fed in under 90 mins hitting shoe lace returns, aceing like a boss, winners left right and center isn't it? So this talk of easy draw is garbage. God mode Cilic wasn't factored into the equation now was he? So let's cut the crap about Fed's supposed cakedraw because it was only so on paper. If Fed had lost to Monfils, you'd have a point but today was a demolition job from Cilic.

I think he never had a shot of winning here, his best shot will be at Wimbledon.

The stars were totally aligned for him here. It's still possible he could have a similar draw and the Clilc/Monfils encounters could go differently, but I would not expect it.

I mean, who would have thought Monfils and Cilic would have their shit together? On the other hand, maybe it speaks to how much Federer has fallen off that they were able to play that well against him.

Clownfils match point would have went in, his unprofessional pose cause the ball to go out.

I will say the stars never align for Fed. But this can signal great things to come. Be patient everyone, dont be too pessimistic. Federer is feeling more positive than you guys.

His problem in this match is same problem as Wimby 2014 Final. Unable to break serve and play on baseline. Normally he broke everyone on tour by keeping the ball in play. Cilic was losing points when he keep the ball in play.

Well you could also say he came out half asleep in the Clownfils match and was very lucky to come through it. He should never have struggled so much to beat Clownfils. Then gets straight setted by Cilic. I think he is done winning slams.

Wimbledon 2015 probably his last huge chance.

AO 2015 i expect Djoker to strike back or Nadal, Murray, Stan.

There are some good points here.

Wimby14 was a good tournament for him. Reached the final and almost took it vs a chooking Nole.

USO14 withou Rafa, 2nd seed and very winnable half. Then some spots opened even more.

Early rounds were easy as usual is for top2. But then came Granollers 1st set. That was key, showed how Federer has bad sets. Lucky rain came along and Fed took care of Marcel. Vs Monfils almost same thing but after sabing few mp Gael just gave up after the 4th.

I dont see this loss to Cilic as embarrising, he just didnt have the tool and argument to beat Cilic yesterday.

Federer could possibly duplicate Wimby15 final like last year. But Mentaly hes lost to Robredo and Cilic in NY so things can start to fall apart. But we know hes one of the most strongest mentally.

I actually disagree that it was an easy draw. In the de facto top 10, Monfils is top 8 and Cilic is in the top 5. Without Monfils, Dimitrov would have been difficult, and without Marin - Bird Shit would play at 500% yet again. Of course the final was always going to be difficult with Novak, but Nishikori was even more dangerous.

Fed's USO draw can't compare to last years draw for the previous winner. That wasn't a transitional era, that was a barren year with little competition.

Just because Roger didn't face a big four doesn't mean it's an easy draw. Only if Roger doesn't face his worst match-up.

Whether it is considered a chance is a subjective grading. I wouldn't be surprised Fraudtards keep dreaming their god would win another slam in the coming slams, so do Fakertards dreaming their god would take down Rafa in RG next year despite being schooled again and again, only to have them dashed in the end. I'd call that the masochistic tendency of MTF retards.
