if you asked me that question last year I'd say he had no chances at all.
But ATM I see no declining in him (or at least, not so big to count him out of anything).

With Roger, you never know, you can't count him out of anything, he won this Wimbledon playing some amazing tennis at times.

Time will tell... I'd really like Rafa getting his super-form again (sorry Nolefans, but I prefer Fedal over Fedovic or Nadalovic), and make that duopoly again rule at the tournaments.

Time will tell... ATM Roger needs to relax and prepare for Olympics, then we'll know better about this things.

20 slams? It took him 2.5 years to win one more; anything more than 17 is a bonus at this point.

He's made some adjustments in his game and Nadal has gotten older (who was his main obstacle). He can hold his own against Nole.

I don't think he'll get to 20 but its not out of the question.

I say he gets to 18.

I will say this, if he win the US Open this year and goes into next season sitting at 19 and can manage to win 1 next year he might have enough in him to push himself to 20 in 2014.

That said its uphill battle he will probably come short, even if he plays well the rest of this year and next year.

If he wins the USO he'd be sitting at 18 going into the next season, not 19. (Your alternate reality is so very appealing though. )

It's definitely an uphill battle. He's competing against players 5, 6 years younger than him. I can't see him winning the French ever again, and Melbourne's courts don't seem to suit his game anymore. That leaves him with Wimbledon and the US Open, which he'd have to win in consecutive years to get to 20. Considering it took him 2.5 years to win just one more, I think it's a pretty tough ask for him to win 2 slams in 2 consecutive years. Hence why anything after 17 would be a big, fat, juicy bonus.

That said, I'd never write him off in any major tournament; he's shown this Wimbledon just what he's capable of doing if 1) he gets a favourable draw; 2) he summons his best tennis at the right moments; and 3) he possesses the belief and the will to go for what he wants.

Retirement might prove an obstacle to this quest. I think Federer this past year has been really driven to prove himself one last time (despite what he says). Now that he won #17 and beat the weeks at #1 record, if he also manages to win gold at the Olympics I could see his motivation start to wane by the end of this season. I hope I'm wrong and that he continues to play forever, though.

This is fairly insightful. Sufficient motivation in terms of goals is a key in continuing to play and improve. Federer already had more records than anyone. Still he kept playing and looking for new goals. I think there are more keys. One other is the love and passion in playing the game. These, Mr. Federer seems to have in abundance. As long as he remains relatively healthy, I think he'll go on playing till he stops enjoying tennis as much relative to other things in his life. He'll make new goals, 100 or 110 titles is one, 8 Wimbledon titles would be another. I think he'll stop when tennis becomes too great a hindrance to his family life or for health reasons.

I know this is a thread about Federer, but I'll contrast this to another great player, Mr. Nadal. He's been quoted before saying he's lost his passion at times. He often distracts himself by doing other things. Now Rafa has achieved his biggest goal - 7 Roland Garros titles, and passed the great Bjorn Borg. He's won the Olympics, he's won Davis Cup. He's done everything on clay that there is to do and has won majors on the other surfaces. There is one other great goal that he has wanted - the Masters Cup - but it may be that he feels that it is out of his reach due to it being on indoor hard court.

I wonder how much longer Rafa will drive himself to play single's tennis. I may be wrong, but I don't think he loves the game in itself with the passion of Federer, and there is nothing wrong with that. His physical health - knees - are probably a limiting factor as well. I think it is healthy to want to move on and do other things and he is obviously has the resources to do that. The next few months should tell us the story with Nadal. I think Nadal could play for the next 4 or 5 years without issues if he focused on clay. The question would be, for what reason? Was Wimbledon 2012 following Roland Garros #7 Nadal's Waterloo, or will Nadal bounce back and set more goals - Vilas sits on top with 45 Career Clay titles - why not Rafa for 50 (see my thread)?

Respectfully,
masterclass

Fed won´t have 20 slams and definitely not 100 titles- actually he can have 100 titles if he will play Stockholm, Vienna and this kind of events next few seasons, but at some point he will starts to decline i give him 1.5year, maximum 2 years and he will be no longer slam contender.

Love the change of the title, 100 titles needs 20 slams like a hand needs a glove.
