Default Kolkata Ch F: Albot df Duckworth: 7-6 (0), 6-1

And Duckworth chokes (or tanks) yet another another chance to jump into the top 100.

Was down 3-5 in the first set, managed to get it to the breaker, but then couldn't score a single point; breadstick in the second set.

Currently at 111 (104 live) he has no points to defend until April.

But this was opportunity no 5 this year - post AO went out first round of HK challenger to 278 Eysseric; second round of Burnie challenger to 258 Mitchell; withdrew from Launceston challenger without explanation; lost in second round of New Delhi to 464 Singh.

Recovered this week to miraculously utterly trounce Singh and progress, only to stumble at the final block.

Mind you, his whole 2014 was more of the same - two challenger titles and improved consistency against 100-200 players. But sprinkled with odd losses (mostly in unsteamed matches) to very low ranked players (viz 774, 625, 509, 480, 386, 332), despite only one such loss in 2013.

At least he reached the final here, but the choking has been remarkable. Then again, it's almost impossible for him not to drag himself into the top 100, so hopefully that will break the spell.

Federer, Nadal and Djokovic pander to plutocrats and charge huge appearance fees. The "trickle down effect" means that tournaments like the Heineken Open now have to pay appearance money for racketeers that many of us have never heard of. It's close to extortion.

At the end of Federer's first round match at the Australian Open a fawning interviewer asked about his kids and if he had bought coach Stefan Edberg a birthday present - no, by the way, the privilege of knocking up with 'King Roger' was enough of a present apparently.

Something happened in that first set tiebreaker. He lost concentration in the second set. He'll get into the top 100 soon.

Pressure of winning the match and finally breaking the Top 100 a bit too much for Ducky. Poor Ducks

The problem is I don't see him doing much when he breaks into the TOP 100 if his game and consistency don't improve dramatically.

Quote me on this prediction

Coric will not win a single title in the next five years. Not even a 250.

It's all PR... Someone started talking about Coric and now you guys believe he's so wonderful kid, his highest ranking - 84, Dzumhur highest ranking - 87. The same actually. Difference? Coric made it via wildcards - to Basel for example, Dzumhur had to reach it by hard work, on qualies, challengers.

I don't see him doing much in the Top 100 either but it looks better on the résumé if manages to crack it

A sympathetic Australian news sources cites 'dizziness' as the reason for forfeiting the doubles:

You'd have to think that it is indeed inevitable given that he only needs about 20 points now.

But then Ward has been sitting on the borderline since November 10 (when he was 102) and still hasn't made it across.

And Duckworth, instead of choosing the easier route of challengers has opted for IW (and presumably Miami) qualifying, even though he hasn't actually got a great record in qualifying for tour events.

I predict at least a few more dizzy spells...
