Good pictures. I hope there will be a highlights video. Doubt it though.

Quoting myself from GM

BTW, I am not complaining as Ryan's fan, but why Jim didn't call Young? The Don have a chance for Olys, and he desperately needs DC tie for it.
I think Jim should call Don. Probably he damaged Ryan's spring season by it (it will be too tough for Ryan to switch to American hard tourneys now) and ruined Don's chances for olmpics in the same time.

I believe they held a DC training camp back in December with several players, Donlad was invited as well. Maybe they feel that Ryan gives them a better chance on clay than Donald.

I am sure Donald would have chances vs Lammer or, how it spells, Chuidinelly?

I'm not sure how many spots are available for each country; if it is three then I don't see Donald getting the spot if he does qualify. I just don't see Roddick, Fish, or Isner turning down the chance since it is on grass at Wimbledon.

4 spots.
Quote:
For the singles competitions, the top 56 in the world rankings on 11 June 2012 of the WTA and ATP tours will qualify for the Olympics. However, entry is limited to four players from a country, which means that players who qualify from countries with four higher-ranked players already participating will not participate, and players outside of the top 56 from countries with less than four players already participating will qualify.
The Don has chances to stay in Top-56

Maybe you're right. I don't really know Courier's thought process. But if I have to guess, it is probably related to the doubles match. Assuming that Big John and Mardy played long matches on the first day, Courier probably wants them rested on the second day if the tie is still alive. Like I say, maybe he thinks Ryan is better on clay or is a better doubles player than Donald. But in all seriousness, I don't really know . If Bob Bryan was available, neither one of them will be on the team anyway.

Yeah, I see. My friend from one russian site said, when I nugged about it:
"Courier is not Olympics captain, he is DC captain and he doesn't give two shits about Olys, he wants fighters to play in his teams.
But in same time we see Russian captain who called Sharapova and Bogomolov Jr to play, without thinking about the result but about Olympic perspective - surely, I can't say who is wiser here.

Pretty stunning and amazing win. Big to all the guys.

You're forgetting that Young has said some pretty awful things about the USTA and some of the senior teammmembers. Harrison has basically been groomed to play DC From the start, being mentored by Andy, training in Austin, etc. No surprise he would get picked over Young

Whether one likes it or not, that is how business is run sometimes. But I really do feel for Donald though. And it kinda sucks that Ryan was not able to defend his points b/c of DC .

What was I thinking, of course the tie would still be alive after day 1 but you get what I was trying to say .

Default Interesting read on Courier's influence and approach in his Davis Cup Campaign

Breakthrough weekend for Captain Courier's team

Quote:
FRIBOURG, SWITZERLAND: It's easy to wonder whether there is greater significance to USA's victory over Switzerland in Fribourg than meets the eye. Of course John Isner's four-sets win over Roger Federer on Friday was the highlight, but there are two areas where the Americans look to have made a massive leap forward as a Davis Cup by BNP Paribas team.

The first is in the team culture that Jim Courier has ushered in as captain. This was only his third tie, but he has clearly learned lessons from last year's victory in Chile and defeat at home to Spain which he is building on now. There are outward signs, such as his players always referring to him as 'Captain Courier' in public pronouncements, and Courier's own decision to sit on the bench in suit and tie rather than the traditional team tracksuit. But these are symbols testifying to a businesslike ethic that is clearly bringing the best out of the US team.

The culture begins at the top,” Courier said after his team had completed a 5-0 whitewash over the Swiss, “and it has to start with me as I'm the team captain. We will win matches, we will lose matches, but what's important is that we put ourselves in a position where we can get the best out of our team, and that means doing things right. And we're trying to do things right. In my playing career I tried to make the most of what I had, and that's what I want from this team.”

It was a point backed up by Ryan Harrison, the 19-year-old American to whom Courier gave a Davis Cup debut in the first of Sunday's singles. “I've heard about what made Captain Courier great, and he's introducing a lot of those things into our team. He leaves me in no doubt about what I have to do to progress.”

The second is in USA's belief in its ability to play on clay. For the past 20 years it has been second nature for teams hosting the US to choose clay to try and exploit the Americans' weakness, but Isner clearly enjoys playing on red clay, Mardy Fish has got better on it throughout his career, the Bryans love playing on clay, and Courier himself is the only American to win the French Open twice.

“I think that if teams are good on clay they'll continue to pick clay against us,” Courier said, “but maybe they'll think twice about picking it as a surface that we'll be uncomfortable on. I don't think that clay is necessarily going to be a weakness for us on a go-forward basis.” I like that mentality...let's hope so.

That could be of major significance, as the Americans may have to play every round away from home this year given the way other first round results have gone. In April's quarterfinals, France may well think twice about choosing clay, especially as its top singles player Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is best on hard courts, and the Americans will not fear France's natural clay-courters such as Richard Gasquet and Gilles Simon.
I like that he is instilling confidence into the team. I also like that he wears a suit instead of traditional team tracksuit despite some people rolling their eyes. Aside from a professional look, it shows me that he means business and is serious about the Davis Cup. He is not here to babysit players, but to do whatever it takes to get them to win; sometimes making decisions that may upset some players. But so far, he seems to have good relationships and command respect from his troops. Keep up the good work Captain Courier. Let's bring the trophy back to the USA!

Default Re: Team USA - Davis Cup - 2012

The USA usually have a good crop of doubles players with the Bryans leading the way. It is not surprising since American hardcourt style of tennis translates pretty well into doubles.

We have several good young doubles players in Ryan Harrison, Jack Sock, Sam Querrey etc. It would be cool to see Ryan and Jack team up for DC after the Bryans retired . Both have already tasted success in their young career (Ryan - 2011 ATP 250 Newport w/ Ebden, Jack - 2011 US Open Mixed Double w/Oudin). Ryan and Jack both have sweet touches at the net (natural volleyers) .
